Rosie’s Place was founded in 1974 as the first women’s shelter in the United States. Our mission is to provide a safe and nurturing environment to help poor and homeless women maintain their dignity, seek opportunity, and find security in their lives.   

Over the years, we have become much more than a shelter. We are a multi-service community center that not only provides meals and shelter but also creates answers for thousands of women a year through wide-ranging support, housing, and education services. Rosie’s Place relies on the generous support of individuals, foundations, and corporations and does not accept any city, state or federal funding. 

The classes offered in Rosie’s Place’s Women’s Education Center (WEC) open doors and introduce guests to a world of possibilities. Last year, almost 400 students from all over the globe participated in English, literacy and computer courses, available year-round and without waiting lists. Volunteer teachers, tutors and substitutes are trained to teach classes customized to meet the everyday needs of women seeking to create lives in the United States. 

OPPORTUNITY

Rosie’s Place is seeking a Teacher Trainer to provide key support and training to volunteer teachers, implementing one-to-one training, information, and guidance, consistent with Rosie’s Place mission, philosophy, and policies. Reporting to the WEC Director, the Teacher Trainer will design engaging and informative teacher training customized to the curriculum and needs of the volunteer teachers and will create a supportive environment for teachers to succeed in both onsite and remote teaching. 

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

• Train and support all teachers, including substitutes, who volunteer both onsite and in a remote classroom. 
• Create dynamic, informative, culturally appropriate and fun lesson plans related to the curriculum as needed for volunteer teachers. 
• Observe classrooms and provide regular support and feedback to volunteer teachers.   
• Collaborate with the Community Engagement team to recruit and fill the volunteer teacher needs of the WEC. 
• Ensure that teaching materials, including curriculum and lesson plans, are available and accessible in both hard copy and electronic formats.  
• Utilize the volunteer database to log things such as teacher schedules and absences, per the direction of the Community Engagement team. 
• Facilitate integration of technology into WEC programming including SMART Boards, by partnering with the IT team to ensure all technology is working correctly and training teachers on how to use it effectively in classrooms and the computer lab. 
• Ensure that computer lab and virtual teachers are equipped to train students on how to use technology to access their classes virtually.   
• Substitute teach as needed. 
• Maintain high level of knowledge about current guests and ensure confidentiality when handling all aspects of guests’ information. 
• Maintain an up-to-date understanding of community resources and best practices in the field of adult education.  
• Maintain accurate records in Salesforce, our database to track guest attendance and other guest records. 
• Participate in weekly supervision, program meetings, and monthly staff meetings. 
• Intervene in guests’ crises and emergencies in a dignified and respectful manner. 
• Perform additional duties as assigned by the Director of Advocacy Services and Advocacy Management team. 
• Perform additional duties as assigned by WEC Director. 

Requirements

• Strong commitment to social justice and the mission of Rosie’s Place. 
• TESOL certification or experience teaching ESOL strongly preferred. 
• Bilingual abilities in Spanish, Mandarin, Haitian Creole in addition to English are strongly preferred. 
• Experience writing lesson plans and teaching adult learners. 
• Experience working with volunteers and/or adult education teachers. 
• Experience working with people who have experienced trauma, homelessness, mental health challenges, and/or substance use disorders . 
• Excellent organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks with strong attention to detail and follow-through. 
• Flexibility and the ability to work effectively in a collaborative and busy department. 
• Excellent oral and written communication skills  
• Demonstrated ability to welcome, train, motivate and manage a diversity of people from various backgrounds – both paid and unpaid. 

WORK EXPECTATIONS

The job is performed in an office environment. Day-to-day work includes paper and computer work as well as interaction with staff, guests, and volunteers. The position may require some teacher support via Zoom. The Teacher Trainer is a full-time, exempt position and is expected to be onsite at Rosie’s Place at least four out of five working days a week. 

We continue to adapt to safety protocols related to COVID-19 as we understand them, and all employees must follow our safety protocols. Among these protocols, we require all employees to be up to date with their COVID vaccinations.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

The starting salary range for this position is $60,000 - $75,000, commensurate with experience. Rosie’s Place offers a robust benefits package, including medical and dental insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, pension contributions, paid vacation, and more.
