General Statement of Duties
Under immediate supervision, perform a variety of activities for the daily group programming, discipline, direct supervision and management of children in an afterschool program. Should act as a role model to school age children (Kindergarten-8th grades) by exemplifying the Vision and Mission of the Graham Recreation and Parks Department, specifically the Programs Division, while conducting age-appropriate activities in a safe, fun, and comfortable atmosphere.
An employee in this class completes administrative tasks and field work as related to an afterschool program. Work is performed under the immediate supervision of the Youth Programs Supervisor and general supervision of the Centers Supervisor. Work is reviewed for ability to follow directions and timely, accurate completion of assigned tasks. Positions in this classification are not exempt from the overtime pay requirements of the Fair Labor Standards Act.
Illustrative Examples of Work
Assist participants with homework and other age-appropriate educational activities;
Plan, organize, and implement activities including crafts, sports, wellness, games, music, drama, field trips, etc.;
Monitor participant behavior and address disciplinary concerns appropriately;
Communicate safety concerns, behavioral issues, injuries, or other incidents to the appropriate supervisor;
Collect data for daily check-in and check-out reports and maintain records;
Assist with set-up and breakdown of activities and cleaning of program area;
Maintain positive and appropriate relations with children, parents, staff, etc.;
Attend and participate in program activities, staff meetings, staff trainings, etc.;
Provide emergency response as per training when necessary;
Other tasks may be assigned as necessary.
Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the work assigned;
Knowledge of safe work practices and ability to perform custodial duties of the position;
Ability to maintain effective working relationships with co-workers and the public;
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Work in this position is light work (exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 10 pounds of force frequently, and/or negligible amounts of force constantly to move objects). Physical activities include balancing, climbing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, reaching, crawling, turning, reaching, standing for extended periods, walking, pushing, pulling, lifting, carrying, grasping, feeling, talking, hearing and repetitive motions for the purpose of instructing/leading recreation programs. Position may require operating assigned equipment and vehicles as needed. The employee must have the visual acuity to prepare and analyze data/figures and is exposed to indoor and outdoor environmental conditions and contact with potentially infectious bodily fluids.
This position is part-time beginning in August with 3-5 hr. weekday afternoon shifts from August-May (not to exceed 40 hrs./wk.). During teacher workdays, hours may expand to 8 hours per day.
A CDL driver’s license (with a Passenger endorsement) and/or experience operating a passenger vehicle or activity bus is highly preferred;
Applicants under age 16 must provide a valid NCDOL worker’s permit;
Applicant should possess First Aid/CPR/AED certification or complete a certification course offered by the City of Graham; attendance at additional training offered by the city is required;
