This is a fantastic opportunity for a Senior Engineer to join our Transactions & Investments Domain API team.

We are responsible for delivering and supporting Open Banking APIs to meet our regulatory obligations. This is an exciting space where we are contributing to the evolving financial landscape of New Zealand and continuously improving how API Data Consumers interact with the bank. We also own 20 integration applications which we are in the process of modernising.

Mō te Tūranga | About the Role

This isn't a traditional Developer role with testing handed over to somebody else, nor is it a standalone QA role. You’ll work across the engineering lifecycle, helping the team design, build, test, deploy and operate high-quality APIs and services.

You’ll take ownership of complex technical work, make sound engineering decisions and help shape solutions that are scalable, maintainable and operationally resilient. You’ll also bring testing and quality thinking into engineering from the outset, helping the team prevent defects rather than relying solely on detecting them later.

This is a permanent, full-time opportunity and can be based in Auckland or Wellington. It is a hybrid role with three days in the office and two days where you can work flexibly. Please note the role is known as Senior Technical Specialist internally.

What are the day-to-day tasks the person in this role will complete?

• Design and Build Quality Solutions: Apply advanced engineering knowledge to design and develop robust, scalable and maintainable systems, considering quality and testability as part of the solution rather than as a separate activity.
• Engineer for Quality: Shape test approaches and automation alongside application development. 
• Own Quality and Risk: Identify technical and quality risks early.  
• Develop and Maintain Automated Tests: Create effective automated checks and maintain automation frameworks alongside the code they validate. 
• Investigate and Solve Problems: Navigate ambiguity, troubleshoot complex issues, reproduce defects, analyse logs and code, identify root causes and implement sustainable solutions rather than short-term fixes. 
• Support Production: Participate in production support and on-call activities, helping maintain system reliability and responding effectively to incidents. 
• Collaborate and Influence: Work closely with other engineers, analysts, product owners and other stakeholders.

What technical skills would be advantageous in this role?

We're looking for an engineer with a strong combination of development and quality engineering capability, including:

• Strong understanding of modern Java, springboot and engineering best practices
• Experience with implementation and maintenance of enterprise RESTful services and event driven architecture
• Docker and container orchestration such as Kubernetes or OpenShift
• Cloud experience, particularly AWS
• CI/CD and infrastructure tooling such as Jenkins and Terraform
• Experience with observability and application monitoring using tools such as Splunk and Dynatrace.
• API testing and automation experience
