PURPOSE
The Institutional Review Board Coordinator, under general supervision, coordinates, provides support, and oversees the review and approval process of all research activities involving human subjects to protect their safety, rights, and welfare in compliance with Institutional Review Board (IRB) regulations for the Human Subjects Research Protections Program.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Protocol Review: 50%
- Serve as research compliance subject matter expert for the Human Subjects Research Protections Program (HRPP).
- Processing protocols, including performing extensive pre-review, guided by Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) and reviewer checklists.
- Making independent determinations as to whether a protocol is human subjects research requiring IRB review or is exempt from IRB review.
- Reviewing and evaluating incoming applications for completeness and potential concerns before forwarding to the IRB.
- Providing guidance to researchers throughout the review process, including one-on-one consults to deliver timely and accurate advice.
- Developing and maintaining templates to assist researchers with study submissions to the IRB.
IRB Administration: 30%
- Provide administrative support to the IRB. Responsible for committee management including onboarding board members, updating rosters, scheduling meetings, and managing meeting agendas and minutes.
- Maintain registrations for the IRB.
- Participate in the development and implementation of policies and procedures to ensure compliance with required protocols, laws, and IRB regulations.
- Ensure and maintain accurate records and documentation.
- Manage the review cycle within the protocol management software system.
Compliance Support: 20%
- Perform routine and for-cause monitoring of protocols, ensuring research activities are conducted as approved. Assist in reviews related to potential non-compliance and adverse incidents.
- Coordinate the development and delivery of educational training programs on IRB compliance for the campus community.
- Regularly look for ways to improve the research compliance program and inform unit and division quality improvement initiatives. Present ideas to the Director of Research Compliance.
- Provide staff back-up support for other committees, including the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
- Perform other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Three (3) years experience in research compliance, the legal field, or similar background.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES
- Self-motivated individual with ability to prioritize incoming submissions and workload to meet nationally accepted review time metrics based on a variety of factors such as continuing review expiration dates, the level of review a submission may receive, and upcoming IRB meeting datesAbility to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule formAbility to interpret research data from various internal and external sources and synthesize results

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Master’s degree.
- Three (3) years of related experience with one (1) year of demonstrated experience in quality improvement initiatives.
- Experience working with Cayuse research compliance software.
- Preference given to applicants with experience working in research compliance administration.
- Experience reviewing social and behavioral studies, including education studies involving children, FERPA, and PPRA.
- Certified IRB Professional (CIP).
SALARY: Commensurate (Dependent on experience and education)
