FLEET TECHNICIAN III
Salary may be negotiable within the range listed above, based on position requirements and successful candidate's qualifications, subject to appropriate authorization.
COUNTY PROMOTIONAL ONLY
This recruitment is open to current County of Orange employees (including extra help and limited term employees) only.
This recruitment will establish a County promotional eligible list that will be used to fill current and future [Classification] opportunities. The eligible list established may also be used to fill positions in similar and/or lower classifications throughout the County of Orange.

OC FLEET SERVICES/OC PUBLIC WORKS
OC Fleet Services (OCFS) is responsible for vehicle life-cycle management, maintenance/repair, and compliance with State and Federal emissions requirements. OCFS provides responsive, cost-effective fleet services to agencies/departments of the County of Orange. OCFS ensures safe and properly maintained public fleet vehicles for internal service customers.
OC Public Works provides services on a regional basis to unincorporated areas, to cities, and to other County agencies and departments. The primary mission of the department is to protect and enrich the community through efficient delivery and maintenance of public works infrastructure, planning, and development services. OC Public Works' core values are integrity, accountability, service and trust.
OCPW is a unique County department comprised of ten (10) service areas: Administrative Services, Agricultural Commissioner/Sealer of Weights & Measures; OC Construction; OC Development Services; OC Environmental Resources; OC Facilities Design & Construction and CUF; OC Facilities Maintenance & OC Fleet Services; OC Infrastructure Programs; OC Operations & Maintenance.

THE OPPORTUNITY
OC Public Works has an excellent opportunity for a skilled Fleet Technician III. Under minimal supervision, incumbents in this position act in a lead capacity providing technical support and training to lower-level Fleet Technicians. The Fleet Technician III also performs highly skilled and more complex work related to specialized maintenance and repairs of light duty vehicles, heavy construction vehicles and specialized equipment, as well as other duties as required.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS AND CORE COMPETENCIES
Possession of a valid California Class A or B Driver's License is highly desirable but not required. The ideal candidate will also have extensive experience in the following core competencies:
Industry Knowledge
- Comprehensive knowledge of techniques and methods of overhauling and repairing heavy gasoline and diesel-powered equipment and related components, including engines, carburetors, electrical systems, and transmissions
- Proficient in the theory, care, and operation of gasoline, alternative, and diesel-powered internal combustion engines and mechanical components for the maintenance and repair of passenger vehicles, light trucks, heavy construction equipment, and trucks powered by gasoline, alternative, or diesel fuels
- Thorough knowledge of principles, methods, and practices pertaining to the operation of an automotive and construction equipment maintenance and repair shop
- Proficient in carrying out work in accordance with all applicable codes, regulations, and guidelines pertaining to vehicle safety and proper operation of the vehicle/equipment, including, but not limited to, Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS), Federal Consumer Product Safety Commission Regulation, California Code of Regulations Title 13 California Highway Patrol, and Occupational Safety and Health Administration
Technical Expertise
- Thorough knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment of the trade, and their use in the maintenance and repair of heavy and other mechanical equipment
- Thorough knowledge of the principles and methods used in a program of preventative maintenance
- Thorough knowledge of preventative maintenance inspection methods
- Proficient in diagnosing and locating mechanical defects and estimating the cost of repairs
- Proficient in reviewing requests and reports of required work on heavy construction equipment and trucks
- Thorough knowledge of safe work methods and safety regulations pertaining to the scope of work
Leadership and Supervision
- Understands the importance of building and maintaining positive and effective working relationships
- Adapts to changing assignments and priorities, and manages changes with affected parties effectively
- Provides leadership and guidance to fleet team to drive achievement of business initiatives
- Maintains a high level of integrity and credibility while developing strategies to get vehicles in on time for services and inspections
- Ensures staff receives proper training in the use, storage, and disposal of flammable liquids and hazardous waste materials in accordance with local, state, and federal laws
- Maintains OCFS sites to meet safety, functionality, and operational standards
- Anticipates future needs and upgrades and prepares sites accordingly for necessary vehicle maintenance

- Capable of articulating and discussing assignments clearly with colleagues and stakeholders
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills to convey information clearly and concisely
- Ability to explain complex technical concepts and systems in a manner that can be clearly understood across each department and agency workforce
- Develops and maintains strong collaborative relationships with team members and external partners

Eligible ListOnce the assessment has been completed, HRS will establish an eligible list of candidates. Candidates placed on the eligible list may be referred to a selection interview to be considered for present and future vacancies.
