Design Engineering Manager

Description

We are seeking a Design Engineering Manager to lead the mechanical and electrical design of our custom generator enclosure product. This role owns technical design authority for the enclosure product—from concept and detailed design through drawing release, standards compliance, and manufacturability—while building, leading, and developing the team of mechanical and electrical design engineers who execute it.

The Design Engineering Manager sets the technical standards, design decisions, and review discipline used to ensure consistent, high-quality enclosure designs.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead and manage the mechanical and electrical design engineering team responsible for the generator enclosure product line.

• Own technical design of the enclosure product, including structural and mechanical layout, enclosure construction and access platforms; electrical power distribution, controls, lighting and grounding; and HVAC, ventilation and acoustic attenuation design.

• Set and enforce engineering design standards and drawing conventions (ASME Y14.5) across mechanical and electrical disciplines.

• Drive compliance with applicable codes and standards, including NEC, UL 2200, UL 2085, UL 142, and relevant NFPA/IEEE requirements.

• Own and continuously improve the engineering peer review process across mechanical, electrical, and submittal drawings.

• Review and approve detailed design packages, BOMs, and engineering changes prior to release to manufacturing.

• Partner with Application Engineering, Project Management, Sales, and Manufacturing to ensure designs are accurate, buildable, and aligned with company capabilities and schedule.

• Identify and resolve technical risks, design conflicts, and manufacturability issues before they reach the shop floor.

• Mentor and develop design engineers, setting technical growth paths and reviewing work product for quality and consistency.

• Support ISO 9001:2015 quality system requirements as they relate to engineering documentation and design control.

• Drive continuous improvement in design tools, templates, and standard work across AutoCAD, SolidWorks, and electrical design software.

Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in mechanical, electrical, or structural engineering preferred; equivalent industry experience will be considered.

• 7+ years of design engineering experience with custom, engineered industrial equipment, including demonstrated leadership or team management experience.

• Working knowledge of both mechanical and electrical design disciplines as applied to industrial enclosures or packaged equipment.

• Strong command of applicable codes and standards, including NEC, relevant UL listings, NFPA, and IEEE grounding practices.

• Proficiency with AutoCAD and SolidWorks; familiarity with electrical design/schematic software is a plus.

• Experience establishing or maintaining engineering standards, peer review processes, or documentation control systems.

• Proven ability to lead, coach, and develop a technical team.

• Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to interface with customers, engineers of record, and internal teams.

• Experience working in or alongside a manufacturing environment.

• Working knowledge of generator systems, diesel engine auxiliaries, or power generation equipment is highly desirable.

Relevant Experience:

• Design leadership for packaged mechanical or electrical equipment, including skids, modules, or OEM assemblies.

• Industrial enclosures, shelters, or containerized systems.

• HVAC, cooling, or ventilation systems integrated into larger equipment packages.

• Electrical power distribution, controls, or grounding system design.

• Structural frames supporting mechanical and electrical components.

• Code-driven, UL-listed product design where compliance and documentation are critical.

• Managing, mentoring, or building a team of design engineers.

Physical Requirements:

• Primarily office-based, with regular shop floor visits to review designs, validate builds, and support engineering-manufacturing coordination.

• Occasional travel for customer meetings, site walks, or project coordination.

• Ability to walk fabrication areas, climb ladders, and visually inspect enclosure assemblies as needed.
