The Process Safety Engineer is responsible for working with our expert EHS team to support the multiyear construction, startup activities and then the ongoing plant operations for this world class life sciences manufacturing facility. You will be responsible for implementation of the OSHA Process Safety Management Program and EPA Risk Management Program.
This position reports to the EHS Manager and is part of the Resins and Technology Team located in Muskegon, MI and will be an on-site role.
What you will do:
- Develop, maintain and execute procedures and programs for full compliance to the OSHA Process Safety Management and EPA Risk Management Program.
- Develop and maintain the facility Process Hazard Analysis schedule by developing the plan and facilitating events. Proper and frequent communication of the plan and internal resource demands are critical to success.
- Evaluate other site procedures for applicability to and compliance with the OSHA Process Safety Management standard.
- Coach and lead teams in successful execution of PSM related events while using engagement principles that drive teams forward for higher levels of performance.
- Embrace and apply the Danaher Business System (DBS) Continuous Improvement tools & processes for EHS improvement & risk mitigation opportunities; partner with the broader Cytiva Global EHS team for best practice & lessons learned sharing and collaboration across sites
Who you are:
- Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering or related field. Ability to read and interpret Process Safety Information, Piping and Instrumentation Diagrams, process chemistry, process kinetics and other related technical information.
- 7+ years of Process Safety Management (PSM) and Risk Management Plan (RMP) experience in highly hazardous manufacturing environments. Possess a strong desire to take on future leadership opportunities within EHS or the manufacturing environment.
- Demonstrated ability to drive organizational change and influence strategic direction, management systems, behaviors, and decision-making through technical leadership and collaboration, without direct supervisory authority.
- Strong communication and presentation skills with the ability to communicate effectively with senior leadership and shop floor level associates.
- Strong facilitation skills in Process Hazard Analysis using either batch HAZOP or continuous process HAZOP and other related techniques such as What-IF or Checklist methodology. Use of PHA software, ability to execute Layers of Protection Analysis (LOPA), or use the What-If PHA techniques.
Travel, Motor Vehicle Record & Physical/Environment Requirements: if applicable for role
- Ability to travel – up to 25% travel, overnight, internationally and within US
- Must have a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
- Ability to lift, move or carry equipment up to 30lb, walk moderate distances/traverse un-even ground, withstand extended periods of standing/sitting, ability to maneuver several flights of stairs and occasionally ascend/descend ladders, stoop/kneel to investigate indoor/outdoor EHS concerns
It would be a plus if you also possess previous experience in:
- Certified PHA Practioner (CPP®) or similar accredited qualification as a PHA Facilitator.
- Certified LOPA Practioner or similar accredited qualification as a LOPA Facilitator.
- Knowledge in Functional Safety for SIS systems e.g. IEC 61511 International standard for Safety Instrumented Systems (SIS).
