The NC Department of Adult Correction is one of the largest state agencies with more than 14,000 employees. It is responsible for safeguarding and preserving lives and property through prevention, protection, and preparation as well as the care, custody, and supervision of all adults sentenced for violating North Carolina laws. This department includes state prisons with custody, healthcare, and facility operations staff as well as probation/parole officers who supervised sentenced people in the community. Description of Work

The Licensed Practical Nurse provides routine practical nursing care to patients in Department of Adult Correction healthcare settings under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, Nurse Supervisor, or other authorized healthcare provider. The position performs direct nursing care within the licensed scope of practice, including patient observation, medication administration, treatments, clinical documentation, and support during routine or emergent healthcare needs.

Key Duties Include:
- Provide direct practical nursing care to patients within the Licensed Practical Nurse scope of practice and established clinical procedures.
- Screen and observe patients, obtain vital signs, monitor intake and output, and report changes in condition or other clinical concerns.
- Prepare and administer routine medications while monitoring for therapeutic effects, side effects, contraindications, or other medication-related concerns.
- Perform routine nursing procedures and treatments such as wound care, respiratory treatments, catheter care, colostomy care, specimen collection, or tuberculosis skin testing.
- Maintain accurate nursing documentation related to patient observations, medications, treatments, procedures, or changes in condition.
- Assist Registered Nurses, physicians, or other healthcare providers with patient assessments, examinations, treatments, or other clinical services.
- Respond to urgent or emergent patient-care situations within established nursing protocols and assigned scope of practice.
- Provide patients with routine healthcare instructions related to treatments, medications, personal care, or other established care needs.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Temporary Role: 11 months with a 31-day break; renewal opportunities available.

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they meet the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement. The Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs)/ Management Preferences are not required. Applicants who possess the following skills are preferred:

  • Demonstrated experience providing direct practical nursing care to patients in a correctional, hospital, long-term care, behavioral health, outpatient, or similar healthcare setting.

  • Demonstrated experience preparing and administering medications in accordance with medication orders, dosage requirements, contraindications, or established nursing protocols.

  • Documented experience performing routine nursing procedures such as wound care, catheter care, colostomy care, respiratory treatments, specimen collection, tuberculosis testing, or similar clinical procedures.

  • Demonstrated experience assessing or monitoring patient conditions through vital signs, clinical observations, intake and output, symptoms, or treatment response and documenting relevant findings.

Location Availability

Statewide –variation of shift assignments according to facility. Availability of specific shifts will be discussed during the interview process.

Veterans’ and National Guard Preference
