Please note: The salary range above represents this position’s earning potential. The anticipated hiring range for this position will be $59,237 to $90,971, based on the candidate’s qualifications and experience.

Montgomery County Department of Health and Human Services is recruiting School Health Room Technicians to work to provide health services to students in Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS).School Health Services is looking for caring and skilled Certified Nursing Assistants to become part of our school family as School Health Room Technicians. This recruitment will be used to recruit and hire multiple temporary part-time substitute School Health Room Technician, to work during the 10-month school year. The temporary substitutes are assigned as needed and may be assigned to work anywhere in the county. Onboarding and training will start on Tuesday, December 1, 2026.
The School Health Room Technician provides standard frontline school health room care to include first aide, emergency care, and administration of medications and treatments in routine and non-routine situations to students (the focus) and staff (emergency situations) at the school of assignment within Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS); a licensed Registered Nurse (RN), who is normally a School Community Health Nurse (SCHN) in School Health Services (SHS) delegates authority to, and provides clinical oversight of, the School Health Room Technician in accordance with Maryland regulations. The School Health Room Technician also performs an array of care related administrative work, such as preparing/maintaining student health records, reviewing student emergency information, documenting health room visits, transcribing medication and treatment orders, checking, refilling and distributing first aid kits, sending out health related letters, preparing health-wellness themed bulletin boards and, as pertinent to the position of assignment, referring students to the School Based Health and Wellness Center.
- Administers standard first aid care to students who present themselves to the school health room as either injured or sick, and returns them to the classroom after treatment, or arranges for parental or other transfer from school in more serious situations.
- Maintains manual and/or computerized daily logs such as containing student's name, nature of complaint, and care provided for each health room visit, and documents more detailed information to individual student school health records.
- Keeps the delegating SCHN informed of unusual health situations in the school and if directed will share the information with the principal or others.
- Reminds teachers of the date and time of health screenings (such as hearing and vision), pulls student's health records, and assists nurse by setting up screening schedule (or may administer screening tests as delegated by the SCHN); notifies the SCHN of any students who fall outside the acceptable range on any screening test; documents the results in student's health files; and supports the SCHN in notification of parents of screening results.
- Monitors compliance with immunization regulations in school to which assigned and, as appropriate, contacts personnel of other school districts, doctors' offices and/or parents of new student to obtain immunization records and to bring health, immunization, and emergency contact records up to date.
- Administers emergency medications, provided by DHHS and MCPS per standing Medical Director orders.
- Assists disabled students requiring assistance of daily living activities (ADLs).
- The work involves sitting at a computer console and keyboarding, moving about, lifting, carrying, supporting, pushing, pulling, adjusting and moving equipment or persons requiring force in the range of 30 to 50 lbs. or more, and other physical demands typical of workers in general health care delivery and health care office work situations.
Selected candidates will be required to successfully completed a pre-employment physical exam, drug screen, criminal background and Child Protective Services clearance as well as a House Bill 486 background and employer review.
Medical and background clearances must be received no later than November 13, 2026, in order to move forward. Onboarding and training will start on December 1, 2026.
Experience: One (1) year of experience working in a position that involved care of, or services to, children or adolescents.
Education: Graduation from high school or High School Certificate ofcompletionrecognized in the State of Maryland.
Equivalency: None.
Licenses, Registrations, Certifications, or Special Requirements:
- Possession and maintenance of an active and current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant-I (CNA-I) and/or Certified Nursing Assistant-II (CNA-II) registered with the State of Maryland.
Post appointment/completion of mandatory training and recertification requirements:
Within forty-five (45) days of County employment (or within one hundred eighty (180) days for temporary employees who have successfully completed County training, or otherwise specified by SHS):
- Possession and maintenance of an active and current certification in CPR;
- Possession and maintenance of an active and current certification in First Aid; and,
- Possession and maintenance of an active and current Certified Medication Technician (CMT) registered in the State of Maryland.
There will be no substitutions for this section.
