Laboratory Scientist (chemist, physicist, materials scientist)

• Location: Ashburn, VA 
• Security Clearance: Active Secret Required - U.S. citizenship required
• Salary: $70,000 - $95,000 Depending on Experience and Education
• Travel: 5%

Position Summary

SURVICE Engineering is currently seeking a Laboratory Scientist (Chemist, Physicist, Materials Scientist) to support our Aberdeen Research Operation. You will accelerate your career and become an integral team member within the defense community.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

• Support laboratory operations, including preparation for testing, sample handling support, equipment setup, data collection, and maintenance of laboratory records.
• Assist in the planning, execution, and documentation of laboratory, pilot, and field tests for interdiction technologies.
• Support development and review of test plans, test reports, standard operating procedures, concepts of operations, and technical procedures.
• Assist with analysis of laboratory and field test data, including summarizing findings, identifying trends, and preparing recommendations for government review.
• Support inventory and asset management for laboratory equipment, consumables, prototypes, and fielded systems.
• Maintain or assist with equipment calibration schedules, maintenance logs, utilization reports, and lifecycle documentation.
• Support logistics coordination for receipt, storage, issuance, shipment, repair, return, and retirement of laboratory or fielded equipment.
• Assist with requirements development, technical documentation, and acquisition-related inputs, including statements of work, performance work statement inputs, technical requirements, and evaluation criteria.
• Contribute to program management products such as schedules, status reports, spend plan inputs, briefings, action item trackers, and stakeholder meeting materials.
• Support systems engineering and technology transition activities by documenting requirements, interfaces, performance observations, risks, issues, and lessons learned.
• Assist with technical reachback activities by researching, documenting, and helping respond to operational or field inquiries related to laboratory or deployed technologies.
• Support development of standardized templates, style guides, fact sheets, slide decks, success stories, and other communication products describing technology capabilities, test results, or transition activities.
• Assist data scientists, engineers, and analysts by reviewing scientific data, supporting data quality checks, interpreting analytic outputs in a chemistry or physical science context, and contributing to reports, dashboards, and decision-support products.
• Participate in process improvement activities, including mapping laboratory workflows, identifying documentation gaps, and recommending improvements to laboratory operations and technology sustainment processes.

Minimum Qualifications of Laboratory Scientist (Chemist, Physicist, Materials Scientist)
Bachelor's Degree in Chemistry, Physical Science, Materials Science, Forensic Science, Biology, Environmental Scientist and 0+ years of relevant experience. Exceptional candidates with less experience will be considered. Candidates are not required to possess all qualifications; if you possess some of the desired qualifications, please apply.

• 0 to 10 years of relevant experience supporting laboratory operations, scientific testing, technical programs, equipment management, or applied research and development.
• Basic understanding of laboratory practices, scientific methods, data collection, and technical documentation.
• Ability to assist with laboratory and field test planning, execution, observation, and reporting.
• Ability to analyze and summarize scientific or technical data using common tools such as Microsoft Excel or similar software.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate technical information into clear language for technical and non-technical audiences.
• Ability to work with multidisciplinary teams that may include chemists, physicists, engineers, logisticians, program managers, acquisition specialists, data analysts, and field operators.
• Familiarity with laboratory equipment, calibration records, maintenance logs, inventory tracking, or asset management processes.
• Ability to support multiple concurrent tasks, track action items, maintain organized records, and meet deadlines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  Desired Skillsets:
  • Experience supporting federal laboratory, research and development, test and evaluation, or technology transition programs.
  • Familiarity with laboratory quality practices, chain-of-custody concepts, safety documentation, or controlled equipment procedures.
  • Experience preparing SOPs, technical reports, test reports, briefings, or acquisition-related technical inputs.
  • Familiarity with data analysis, visualization, dashboard tools, GIS products, or modeling and simulation outputs.
  • Experience with inventory management systems, government property controls, logistics coordination, or equipment lifecycle management.
  • Understanding of systems engineering, requirements management, configuration management, or test and evaluation processes.
  • Ability to support field demonstrations, operational assessments, or technology deployment activities.
