INTRODUCTION: 

This position is responsible for implementing a community-based intervention program using traditional foods and sustainable ecological culture specific approaches to promote healthy life styles and prevent type 2 diabetes for tribal families. The Healthy Traditions program conducts educational activities which promote the use of traditional foods through hunting, gathering, gardening, cooking, food preservation and protecting our natural resources. The Coordinator brings together existing tribal and local resources to create educational and hands-on opportunities to revive healthy tribal food traditions. 



DUTIES:

  • Manage the operations, participants, and grounds of the Siletz Community garden.
  • Assist area offices staff in providing Healthy Traditions activities and services.
  • Manage program budget for programming.
  • Assist in writing and managing grant funding.
  • Develop partnerships with CTSI programs to integrate traditional foods education into their ongoing programming.
  • Develop cultural education materials and lesson plans to promote knowledge and use of traditional foods.
  • Represent the tribe at cultural sharing events and design displays for public education.
  • Works with staff (culture, prevention, and education, natural resources) to incorporate the use of traditional foods and sustainable ecological practices.
  • Assists with development to further project goals and objectives.
  • Build relationships with outside organizations, such as Forest Service, BLM, ODFW, extension service, and other native traditional foods projects. 
  • Design publicity to promote Healthy Traditions activities and events. 
  • Develop Healthy Traditions volunteers and participant leadership in activities and projects. 
  • Provide information to tribal members about traditional and locally grown foods through presentations, hands-on activities and written materials. 
  • Acquires and maintains resource library of information on the acquisition, processing, preserving and preparation of traditional and locally grown foods.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Coordinating with state and local park rangers to provide gathering opportunities and access to traditional foods and materials.


Requirements

REQUIREMENTS:

Associate’s Degree in General Studies and two years experience in social services, nutrition, health, or related work environment, - OR - an equivalent combination of education and experience. 


Knowledge of:

  • Traditional foods, protections for sensitive habitats, and food sovereignty issues. 
  • Computers, office equipment, digital camera and video equipment. 
  • Traditional Ecological Knowledge (TEK) of native plants, historical sites.
  • Indigenous Conservation efforts.
  • Understanding of protocols and concerns around proprietary knowledge and the issues of sharing, teaching, and providing access to TEK.
  • Resource gathering and harvesting including the overharvesting, propagation, restoration, and reestablishment.


Experience in:

  • Budget management and expenditure tracking.
  • Grant writing, grant reporting and quarterly reports.
  • Curriculum Development.
  • Teaching Siletz tribal culture and history pertaining to traditional foods and gathering.
  • Communicate effectively using both verbal and written skills.
  • Working with state and local governments to establish a relationship that aides in access to of rescue, restoration, and reestablishment of native plants and natural resources.


Ability to:

  • Work with other tribal programs, tribal committees, and local schools, outside programs and agencies, and tribal members. 
  • Demonstrate excellent public speaking skills with the ability to make presentations to and work with diverse groups of people, including Tribal members, Tribal elders and the general public. 
  • Travel and work weekends and evenings. 
  • Manage multiple projects and grants. 
  • Ability to prioritize, prepare, write and propose grant based projects.
  • Maintain competing priorities and projects. 
  • Provide access and engagement with intellectual property and cultural materials.
  • Teaching and sharing protocol for TEK and resources to preserve tribal propriety. 


Other:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license and be eligible to operate a GSA vehicle.
