PURPOSE

The position provides leadership and oversight for the collegiate recreation fitness program and empowers student staff to develop and foster fitness/wellness programs that promote student learning, development, and success.

DESCRIPTION

Functional Area 1: Fitness & Wellness Programming 

Percent Effort: 40%

  • Administer Fitness and Wellness Programs to include group exercise, personal training, wellness seminars, employee wellness program, beachfront small group trainings, student wellness program and special events for the University community at Texas A&M Corpus Christi. 

  • Plans, coordinates, and leads presentations, classes, and workshops on health promotion/wellness topics and focuses on delivering programming that aligns with components of the dimensions of wellness.

  • Collaborates with campus partners and compiles and produces a semester/annual calendar of wellness events during the academic year.

  • Keep track of the client's progress and make necessary adjustments to the wellness plan to ensure continued success.

  • Collaborates with various campus departments (i.e. nutrition, counseling center, etc.) to promote personal development and growth in the campus community.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate wellness programs to improve the overall health of employees or clients.

  • Provide education and resources on nutrition, fitness, stress management, and other wellness topics.

  • Some weekends and evenings as needed other duties as assigned.

Functional Area 2: Planning/Administration

Percent Effort: 30%

  • Assist and lead departmental and university wide Wellness special events.

  • Write, evaluate, implement, and support Fitness & Wellness policies for program.

  • Gather participation numbers and demographic information for program enhancement.

  • Serves in a leadership role on the University Wellness committee collaborating with campus partners and compiles and produces a semester/annual calendar of wellness events during the academic year for faculty/staff.

  • Plans, coordinates, and leads presentations, classes, and workshops on health /wellness topics and focuses on delivering programming that aligns with components of the dimensions of wellness.

  • Prepare, forecast, and monitor program-related budgets.

  • Prepare and submit regular feedback, including quarterly and annual reports, financial reports, participation counts, goal updates and key performance indicators.

Functional Area 3: Supervision

Percent Effort: 30%

  • Recruits, hires, trains, schedules, mentors, evaluates, and manages a graduate assistant, Weight-room trainer attendants, personal trainers, group Ex instructors and fitness staff in compliance with departmental and University regulations. 

  • Progress clients through their corrective exercise programs in a safe and effective manner

  • Serves as the subject matter expert on wellness topics, consulting with internal and external partners on the established strategic wellness initiatives.

  • Assist in the training of the Fusion software package for the department and serve as the secondary point of contact for troubleshooting, training, and configuration. 

  • Leads Campus Recreation’s student wellness initiatives. Creates, implements, and oversees wellness coaching program for students that focuses on creating healthy lifestyles.

  • Assists in departmental risk management by coordinating, teaching, and overseeing certification courses in American Red Cross CPR/ AED/First Aid ensuring all personnel certifications are filed within the Wellness arena.  

  • Oversees regular in-service trainings and meetings for Group Ex instructors’, Personal Trainers, Wellness coaches and Fitness attendants and ensures staff training is within compliance for operation. 

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in Recreation or Sports Management

  • Six (6) years of related experience.

  • Additional education may be considered as a substitution for the minimum experience requirement.

    • Master’s degree and four (4) years of related experience

  • Experience related to fitness & wellness/event management and scheduling multiple spaces and programs.

  • Experience with hiring and supervision of a support staff/team.

  • Possess strong interpersonal, organizational and conflict management skills.

  • Willingness to work weekends and evenings as needed.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Masters in Recreation / Student Affairs related areas.

  • Group Fitness Instructor and Personal Trainer Certification by a nationally recognized agency

Salary is commensurate upon education and/or experience.

NOTE: Employment may be impacted by the Presidential proclamation issued on September 19, 2025 and the moratorium issued by Texas Governor Abbott on January 27, 2026.
