This position reports to:
R&D Unit Lead__
At ABB’s Research Center in Baden-Dättwil, Switzerland, we explore new technologies that support and drive the development of ABB’s next-generation products and solutions.
The Industrial Solutions department is organized into four research teams that collaborate closely with development teams across ABB’s various divisions. Our research activities cover a broad range of fields, including Power Electronics (converter topologies, control, EMC, and reliability), Industrial Software (cybersecurity, ML/AI, real-time embedded systems, and connected systems), as well as Sensing & Analytics (sensor technologies, perception, and electronics).
This is a unique opportunity for a leader who is passionate about combining people management with the strategic alignment of an R&D department, while also overseeing operational aspects such as work safety, R&D processes, and stakeholder management.
Your main responsibilities include
Lead and represent the department with ~45 members: people management (recruitment, development), support of project portfolio management and research strategy, continuous improvement of processes and lab infrastructure
Support the Research Center Management Team as active member, including the coordination of global R&D activities
Guarantee professional, top quality definition and execution of R&D projects
Contribute to extend the technical and process knowledge to the organization with special focus on HSE topics
Qualifications for the role
Experience in leading an R&D group or an R&D department
Communication and leadership skills
PhD in physics, electrical engineering, computer science, chemistry or a similar R&D track record
Knowledge of at least two of the core topics described above, combined with a willingness and ability to develop knowledge in other areas
Experience with the development process for industrial products
Track record in delivering market-oriented R&D results
Fluency in English and basic knowledge of German
