Position Overview

The Ohio State University Marion Campus seeks a 100% FTE 9/12 lecturer to teach Biology and Evolution, Ecology, & Organismal Biology courses in academic year 2026-2027. Responsible for facilitation of in-class learning activities, assessments (i.e., quizzes, exams, and homework if applicable), offering of weekly office hours, submission of grades, and resolution of any ongoing student or course issues.

Performance Objectives

Teaching: Develop and deliver courses in formats that could include in classroom, online, or hybrid.  Contribute to the creation and improvement of course content.

Education and Experience Requirements

Required: Master’s degree or equivalent in Biology or related field.  Evidence of successful teaching at a post-secondary level.

Desired: Familiarity with The Ohio State University’s curriculum.

Additional Information

The budget for this position is up to $55,000. The offer for this position will be based on internal equity and the candidate's qualifications.

The College

The Ohio State University at Marion offered its first classes in 1957. The campus prides itself on providing positive interactions among faculty, staff, administration, and students that promote a unique “culture of caring.” The Marion campus sits on 188 acres and shares the campus with Marion Technical College. In addition, 66 acres of campus are leased for agricultural purposes. The two institutions have a strong partnership, and a cost share agreement governs operations and expenses for facilities, public safety, the library, and student activities.

Ohio State Marion currently enrolls 900 students who are taught and supported by 37 tenure track or tenured professors, 2 clinical teaching professors, 50 associated faculty, and 19 staff members. The campus focuses on the academic success of students (small campus; average class size of 20; many undergraduate research opportunities; easy access to faculty and staff; staff resources to support academic achievement), but also the personal success of students through 28 student organizations, mental health and wellness services, recreational sports, internship opportunities, and community engagement opportunities.

Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology

The Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology has a rich tradition of blending basic and applied research. We promote scientific discovery and scientific literacy through teaching and public outreach. We strive for leadership in our scholarly disciplines combined with excellence in the classroom. The mission of the Department of Evolution, Ecology, and Organismal Biology is to provide high quality, comprehensive programs in undergraduate and graduate instruction, to generate and disseminate knowledge gained through original research, and to provide service to the University and professional and public sectors.  As a department in the College of Arts and Sciences, the Department contributes to the mission of the College in the areas of teaching, research and service in evolutionary biology, organismal biology, and ecology.  The department is committed to the University’s mission.

As necessary components of this mission, the Department is committed to continuous improvement through regular scrutiny of the undergraduate and graduate curricula; the hiring of tenure-track faculty and other personnel who enhance or have the strong potential to enhance the Department’s quality in the areas of teaching, research, and service; the recruitment and retention of a workforce and student body committed to the creation of a welcoming climate; and the development and maintenance of a physical and intellectual environment that fosters those activities.

Formal classroom courses and original research focus on a broad spectrum of topics.  The Department is particularly focused on understanding basic processes that affect the evolution, physiology, behavior, and population biology of organisms, as well as species interactions and ecosystem function.  The faculty, staff, and students focus on fundamental concepts and theory at levels of organization ranging from molecular to global.

The Center for Life Sciences Education (CLSE)

CLSE at the Ohio State University was established in autumn of 2006 expressly to meet the challenge of teaching biology to the next generation of students, researchers, and educated citizens. CLSE’s mission, expertise, and values support the academic plan and the science and technology plans of the College of Arts and Sciences, the Ohio State University, and the State of Ohio. The CLSE draws on the skills of its outstanding faculty and staff to design and deliver effective undergraduate biology education programs aligned with the recommendations in the NSF/AAAS report, “Vision and Change in Undergraduate Biology Education.” A suite of courses and programs offered through the CLSE prepare our undergraduate and graduate students to become life-long learners (and to teach others to become life-long learners) in a rapidly changing world.  As we pursue programmatic, curricular, and pedagogical innovations in biology teaching, we measure the impact of these changes on student learning, and we disseminate information about our best practices among faculty, staff, graduate students, and undergraduate students in the college, as well as to the larger community.
