Job Description:

POSITION PURPOSE SUMMARY:

Railton House provides a safe, structured, and supportive residential environment for individuals on conditional release from federal correctional institutions. Working in partnership with the Correctional Service of Canada (CSC) and the Parole Board of Canada, Residential Workers support residents in meeting the conditions of their release, promoting accountability, and assisting with successful community reintegration.

The Residential Worker is responsible for maintaining the safety and security of residents, staff, visitors, and the facility while providing direct support, guidance, supervision, and administrative assistance. The incumbent contributes to a respectful and professional environment that reflects The Salvation Army's mission, values, policies, and standards.

KEY ACCOUNTABILITIES:

Resident Supervision and Support

• Monitor and support residents in complying with the conditions of parole, statutory release, and house rules.
• Provide practical guidance, support, coaching, and encouragement to residents.
• Develop and maintain respectful professional relationships while maintaining appropriate boundaries.
• Support residents in addressing challenges related to reintegration, daily living, and community adjustment.
• Assist residents in identifying and resolving practical problems and accessing community resources.
• Provide personal, practical, and moral support as appropriate.
• Demonstrate empathy, cultural awareness, and respect when working with individuals from diverse backgrounds.

Shift Operations

• Arrive 10 to 15 minutes prior to the start of shift to ensure a smooth transition.
• Conduct a complete house round before accepting responsibility for the shift.
• Verify resident head counts and ensure all related documentation is accurate and complete.
• Ensure building security procedures are followed, including checking doors, common areas, and facility conditions.
• Review of logbooks, reports, communications, and relevant documentation from outgoing staff.
• Maintain awareness of resident whereabouts through sign-out procedures and verification of call-ins.
•  Remain alert and available throughout the shift.
• Carry and respond appropriately to safety and communication devices, including portable phones, panic buttons, radios, or similar equipment.

Intake, Documentation, and Administration

• Assist with resident intake, orientation, room assignments, and discharge procedures.
• Complete all required documentation accurately and in a timely manner.
• Record incidents, observations, resident interactions, and program information according to policy.
• Maintain logs, checklists, medication records, and other required operational records.
• Create, update, and organize documents and reports as required.
• Liaise with external agencies, referral sources, parole officers, and community partners as appropriate.

Safety and Security

• Ensure the safety and security of residents, staff, visitors, and the facility.
• Respond effectively to emergencies, crises, conflicts, and behavioural concerns.
• Utilize de-escalation, conflict resolution, and crisis intervention techniques.
• Serve as the first point of contact for situations that do not require emergency services.
• Report incidents, safety concerns, and unusual occurrences to supervisors promptly.
• Monitor and enforce facility policies, resident expectations, and safety procedures.

Program and Facility Support

• Assist with daily operational requirements, including light cleaning, organizing, laundry, food service preparation, and facility upkeep.
• Support residents in completing assigned chores and responsibilities.
• Monitor and document completion of resident responsibilities as required.
• Provide support to staff involved in program delivery and resident services.
• Perform other related duties as assigned by the Program Coordinator or designated supervisor.

Working Conditions:

• Work is performed within a residential community corrections environment.
• Shifts required for daytime, nighttime and evenings – 24/7 facility
• The position will require a moderate amount of keyboarding and manual record keeping of day-to-day activities and potential of information classified as highly disturbing.
• Shift work, including evenings, nights, weekends, and holidays, may be required.
• Regular exposure to stressful situations, monotony, isolation, odors, crisis intervention, and potentially unpredictable behaviour; and such behaviour will require intentional debrief and consultation with leadership and occasionally Parole Officers.
• Exposure to residents experiencing mental health, addiction, trauma, or reintegration challenges.
• May involve moderate physical activity, including standing, walking, stair climbing, and occasional lifting.
• Possible exposure to infectious illnesses, bodily fluids, verbal aggression, and other workplace hazards.
• Employees are required to comply with all occupational health and safety policies and practices; including but not limited to safety devices such as panic button and paging device/telephone.
• Employees will have little to no travel required.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE QUALIFICATIONS:

Education

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Post-secondary education in Social Services, Human Services, Criminology, Psychology, Corrections, Community Services, or a related field is considered an asset.
• Alternative combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Certifications

The following certifications are required or must be obtained within a reasonable period following hire:

• Subject to Canadian Reliability Status for duration of employment
• Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
• Standard First Aid and CPR
• Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (NVCI) or equivalent
• Mental Health First Aid
• Any additional training required by The Salvation Army or Railton House

Experience

• Minimum one year of experience working in social services, corrections, residential support, community services, mental health, addictions, or a related field preferred.
• Experience working with justice-involved individuals is considered an asset.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong understanding of offender behaviour, risk factors, and community reintegration principles.
• Ability to assess resident needs and respond appropriately.
• Effective conflict resolution, crisis intervention, and de-escalation skills.
• Strong communication skills, both written and verbal.

HOURS : 36 Hours weekly

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $18.30 to $22.87 with a maximum of $27.44.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
