What can you expect?

As the Survey Instrument Man, you will work onsite in Houston, Texas and the surrounding areas and you will be responsible for operating and maintaining survey instruments, collecting precise field data, and supporting survey crews in executing accurate land surveys. This role plays a critical part in ensuring measurements are properly obtained, recorded, and verified. The position reports to field project locations in and around the Houston Metro area.

How will you do it?

  • Operate survey instruments including total stations, GPS/GNSS receivers, data collectors, and digital levels
  • Set up and ensure proper calibration of survey equipment, including backsights and control points.
  • Collect and record accurate field data, including distances, angles, and elevations.
  • Coordinate with the survey crew to ensure proper data collection and workflow efficiency.
  • Interpret field notes, plans, and staking instructions to perform assigned survey tasks.
  • Verify accuracy of measurements and perform field calculations as needed.
  • Assist in layout, staking, and marking of points for construction and boundary surveys.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve minor equipment or data collection issues in the field.
  • Maintain survey instruments and equipment to ensure proper function and accuracy.
  • Assist with transport, setup, and breakdown of field equipment and materials.
  • Work in various outdoor environments and conditions, including uneven terrain and inclement weather.
  • Travel for work-related purposes for extended periods, as needed.
  • Maintain a safe work environment and follow all safety protocols.
  • Work collaboratively with crew members in a respectful and professional manner.
  • Perform other duties as directed.

Supervisory Functions:

This position does not have formal supervisory responsibilities but may provide directions to rodmen or junior field staff as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:

  • Working knowledge of surveying principles, practices, and equipment operation.
  • Proficiency in operating total stations, GPS equipment, and data collectors.
  • Familiarity with OSHA Construction Industry Safety Regulations.
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy in data collection and recording.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and survey documents.
  • Basic mathematical and problem-solving skills for field calculations.
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to adapt to changing field conditions and project requirements.
  • Ability to safely operate tools and equipment.
  • Ability to work under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to travel for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to work in various weather conditions and rugged terrain.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule, including weekends and holidays as needed.

Who is Brice Highway LLC looking for?

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma, or equivalent required.
  • Ability to pass drug, driving (if applicable), and background screening.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Two (2) or more years of experience on a survey crew, with instrument operation experience preferred.
  • Valid state driver’s license and ability to operate a vehicle under company policy preferred.

Working Environment:

The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.  Brice Highway LLC has a fast-paced multi-tasking office environment requiring a high degree of efficient and effective performance. This role involves primarily field-based work in a fast-paced environment with frequent outdoor exposure. Duties may require working in varying weather conditions, uneven terrain, and active construction sites. Flexibility in scheduling and occasional overtime may be required to meet project demands.
