What you'll own:
The Trust organization powers the systems that establish trust across the Walmart Marketplace ecosystem by detecting fraud, enforcing marketplace policies, protecting customers and sellers, and enabling compliant business operations at scale.
The growing sophistication of fraud patterns, regulatory requirements, and AI-driven capabilities demands a cohesive architectural vision across multiple platforms and domains.
We are looking for a Distinguished Architect to define the technical strategy, shape next-generation risk platforms, drive architectural excellence across engineering teams, and influence enterprise-wide technology decisions that strengthen Walmart's trust ecosystem.
Architecture & System Design
Lead end-to-end technical design for complex initiatives involving from API contracts, UI interfaces and data models to distributed system topologies and cross-cutting concerns.
Drive platform standardization by defining and documenting reference architectures, design patterns, and implementation guardrails that teams adopt
Evaluate and select technologies, frameworks, and cloud-native patterns with a clear-eyed understanding of trade-offs at Walmart's operational scale
Author and review RFCs and architecture decision records (ADRs) that become the technical canon for the platform
Hands-On Engineering
Write production-grade code and not prototypes or proof-of-concepts, test and deploy them to production
Solve complex problems considering performance, reliability and scalability
Prototype new solutions rapidly using Al-augmented development workflows and then drive them to production quality
Conduct deep-dive code reviews that raise the technical bar of the team.
Own the full software development lifecycle for your initiatives involving design, development, testing, deployment, observability
Complex Problem Solving
Solve the hardest and complex problems and enable the team while doing so
Lead technical investigations for P0/P1 incidents affecting platform services; own the root cause analysis and define permanent fixes
Challenge technical assumptions early in the design process before they become expensive production mistakes
Navigate ambiguity with confidence by breaking down underspecified problems into structured technical approaches and drive alignment across stakeholders
Platform Reliability & Operational Excellence
Design for resilience from first principles. Define and own the platform's non-functional requirements
Instrument systems to be deeply observable and use the signals to drive continuous improvement
Build runbooks and operational playbooks that enable the broader team to operate the services confidently
What you’ll bring:
- B.Tech. / B.E. / M.Tech. / M.S. in Computer Science or relevant discipline
- 15+ years of experience in design and development of highly-scalable distributed applications and platforms - particularly on multi tenant, SaaS products built with a platform mindset.
- Demonstrated experience as an architect of large engineering teams with 50+ engineers.
- Deep understanding of Marketplace Risk Technology domain.
- Thought leader on GenAI - should be able to show clear examples where the candidate lead GenAI usage/PoCs.
- Experience building a 'Code, Deploy, Run' pipeline using DevOps best practises by leveraging the best available CI/CD tools.
- Strong computer science fundamentals: data structures, algorithms, design patterns.
- Own Tech Debt/Tech Modernization - Ability to balance the long-term "big picture" and short-term implications of design decisions.
- Having proficiency in at least a couple of language like Java, Scala, Golang
- Hands on experience in Microservices, RESTful webservices development in Java/NodeJS(SpringBoot, Dropwizard or equivalent framework).
- Good knowledge in messaging systems: Kafka / RabbitMQ
- In depth knowledge of Cloud Native Architecture, Microservice Architecture and related stacks (Service Registry, ELK / Splunk, service registry, VMs, etc.) and container technologies (Docker, Kubernetes, etc.)
- Knowledge of at least one of Azure/Google Cloud Platforms with an ability to learn fast where required.
- Self Starter with the ability to multitask across several priority areas in the face of fuzzy situations.
- Demonstrated end-to-end ownership for development and design of multiple cloud-based projects with 4 9s reliability.
- Strong hands on development skills to prototype technical solutions.
- Strong desire to drive change, and ability to adapt to change quickly. Proficient in new and emerging technologies.
- Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills - including negotiation, facilitation, and consensus building skills; ability to influence and persuade, without direct control.
- Mentoring/coaching Staff & Principal Engineers - respected tech leader that rockstar engineers can look up to.
- Focus on reusability, frameworks, patterns and configurations tools for faster development.
- Contributing back to opensource.
- Practitioner of Agile methodology
