Axle is seeking a Biological Scientist to join our vibrant team at the National Institutes of Health (NIH) supporting the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) located in Bethesda, MD.

Statement of Work Details:
-
Assess technical capabilities of TBIP to the conduct of NHP experiments with infectious agents and make recommendations to TBIP program director. - 1
-
Monitor and recover anesthetized NHPs and rabbits for procedures, including PET/CT scans. - 2
-
Assist with microbiology assessment of samples collected from research subjects in a BSL-3 environment. - 3
-
Provides technical experience needed to assist in studying the basic principles of plant and animal life.
-
Clearly communicate any changes in animals’ health status to facility veterinarian and appropriate team members.
-
Advise PIs on clinical monitoring of animals.
-
Provide feedback on methods and technical procedures to improve upon workflow and results of animal monitoring, where applicable.
-
Assist with managing the work assignments of the TBIP program staff including distribution of responsibilities among team members so that all work gets completed in a timely fashion.
-
Assists with performing basic laboratory experiments and procedures.
-
Assist with providing critical care and intervention of an anesthetized animal, knowing when there is an issue and how to correct it.
-
Manipulate infectious and radioactive NHPs and rabbits in a safe and proficient manner.
-
Run/use centrifuge, CBC machine, Chemistry machine, i-STAT, glucometer, and other equipment and provide results to appropriate scientific personnel.

Assist in training TBIP staff in use of this equipment
-
Assist with scheduling multiple overlapping experiments with program PIs and streamline tasks so that multiple experiments with two pathogens can occur within the allotted animal space for old world primates, new world primates, and rabbits.
-
Prepares, organizes and maintains various lab samples, supplies, and equipment.
-
Perform blood draws, catheter placement, intubation, injections, BALs, necropsies and other technical needs in NHPs and rabbits.
-
Train staff as necessary for these manipulations so work can be conducted in multiple rooms at once.

Process bloods and tissues according to specific needs of multiple experiments.
-
Learns new laboratory techniques and procedures.
-
Maintain accurate animal records and documentations associated with technical procedures of the animals.
-
Assist staff to maintain inventories of relevant supplies for coming experiments.
-
Collect and organize data, performing data analysis and interpretation, and assist in preparing technical reports, manuscripts, summaries, protocols, and inventories.

Maintain proper safety training in place and is followed under the guidance of the TBIP Director.

Monitor training records of staff for annual training compliance and report any additional training needs to the Director as needed.

This role has a market-competitive salary with an anticipated base compensation range listed below. Actual salaries will vary depending on a candidate’s experience, qualifications, skills, and location.
