The Role
The GSC Business Manager provides operational leadership within Global Supply Chain production operations. This role helps manage the day-to-day complexity of the department by supporting Shift Leaders and Group Leaders, coordinating the effective use of people, materials, and equipment, and reinforcing a culture of teamwork, accountability, and continuous improvement. The position requires technical knowledge, sound independent judgment within the framework of Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS), and a consistent focus on Safety, People, Quality, Responsiveness, Cost, and Environment (SPQRCE). The successful candidate is comfortable addressing complex operational challenges, collaborating across organizational levels, and developing strong, highly effective teams.
As a leader in GSC Production, the Business Manager is responsible for implementing and executing established departmental business processes while helping ensure that operational priorities are clearly understood and consistently achieved. The role partners with Shift Leaders, Group Leaders, salaried employees, hourly employees, union representatives, and plant management to support safe, stable, and efficient production performance. The Business Manager uses independent judgment, structured problem solving, and GMS principles to respond to changing production conditions and sustain alignment with SPQRCE objectives.
What You'll Do (Responsibilities)
- Support Shift Leaders and Group Leaders in managing the complexity of production operations, prioritizing issues, coordinating resources, and maintaining a respectful atmosphere of teamwork and cooperation.
- Implement and execute the department’s established business processes, standards, and operating routines while reinforcing consistency and accountability across the team.
- Promote the effective use of personnel, material, and equipment to support production requirements, minimize disruption, and improve overall operating performance.
- Participate in the training, coaching, and development of salaried and hourly employees, helping build highly effective teams with the knowledge and skills needed to perform their work safely and consistently.
- Support the application of Global Manufacturing Systems (GMS) processes within the department and across the plant when required, serving as a knowledgeable resource for process adherence and continuous improvement.
- Provide operational support during launch and pilot activities, helping the organization meet or exceed production schedules, cost expectations, quality requirements, and readiness milestones.
- Maintain awareness of applicable quality standards, communicate department quality goals, and engage the appropriate resources to identify, contain, and resolve quality concerns.
- Build and maintain effective working relationships with employees, union representatives, and management through clear communication, professional conduct, and consistent follow-through.
- Understand and consistently administer the National and Local Agreements between General Motors and the United Auto Workers Union.
- Implement corrective and preventive systems that address known issues, reduce variation, and help prevent recurring problems from affecting safety, quality, delivery, or cost.
- Promote safe work practices and support objectives related to ergonomics, occupational health and safety, housekeeping, and overall workplace conditions.
- Motivate, train, and develop employees so they can perform their responsibilities effectively using standardized work methods and established operating procedures.
- Ensure team members receive adequate JIT (Job Instruction Training) and understand the required methods, quality expectations, and safety considerations associated with their assigned work.
- Support the achievement of production schedules and product requirements by applying lean manufacturing and synchronous principles, with emphasis on variation reduction, cost control, productivity improvement, and stable process performance.
Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
- 5+ years of experience in production within a manufacturing environment.
- Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience.
- Ability to analyze complex production issues, determine appropriate courses of action, and make timely decisions within established GMS and departmental guidelines.
- Strong communication, collaboration, and teamwork skills, with the ability to work effectively with employees, union representatives, peers, and management.
- Ability to lead through changing operational conditions while maintaining focus on SPQRCE priorities and business objectives.
- Commitment to employee development, standardized work, continuous improvement, and the consistent application of safe and effective operating practices.
