QUALIFICATIONS Required –associate's degree in healthcare related field or a minimum of 2 years clinical experience in an inpatient/residential rehabilitation, psychiatric or developmental disability setting. Required - Valid current Driver’s License Required Ability to read, write and understand instructions. Preferred – Six months experience working in a rehabilitation/treatment or human services setting. Preferred Experience working with groups or teams. JOB SUMMARY The Behavioral Tech is a paraprofessional care giver who assists in the care and treatment of patients who have sustained an acquired brain injury. The Behavioral Tech works/functions under the direction and guidance of the Registered Nurse. PHYSICAL DEMANDS Job requires occasionally: Sitting overhead reaching, climbing, squatting, kneeling, crawling, and lifting/carrying of 100 pounds. ​Job requires frequently: Bending, pushing/pulling of 60 pounds of force and lifting/carrying of 50 pounds. Job requires constantly: Standing, walking, forward reaching, gripping, and fine hand manipulation. Job requires standing frequently throughout the day for usually no longer than 60 90 minutes at a time. Job requires the ability to move/carry over 100lbs. (as in a patient restraint or patient transfer). Fine manipulation is required as related to writing, and computer usage. In addition, gross motor skills are required as related to complete and utilize Safety Care training, including all aspects of physical skills COGNITIVE DEMANDS Job allows for the application of learned knowledge and basic follow through on easily identifiable steps. Reference materials are available. Limited inference is necessary. Some selective attention is necessary to complete task. Job requires legibility, spelling accuracy and logical sentence and paragraph organization. A working knowledge and familiarity with professional medical terminology and definitions is required. Job requires a high level of communication skill including expression of abstract/complex ideas, use of negotiation and active listening and an ability to dialogue with multiple parties. Job requires an ability to comprehend lengthy and complex messages or paragraphs and to follow multistage and 3 step commands. Job requires the ability to add and subtract two digit numbers. Multiply and divide 10's and 100's by 2, 3, 4, 5. Perform basic arithmetic operations with coins and bills for the purpose of cashier/petty cash, etc. Performs operations with measuring units such as cup, quart, foot, yard, ounce, pound, milliliter, and kilograms. Job requires flexibility of thought, reasoning, organizational skills, and ability to function in behavioral and physical care situation. WORK DEMANDS The Behavioral Tech works primarily indoors with occasional outside work (as related to community reintegration with patients). The environment is frequently noisy. Work schedule may change due to patient and unit needs. Occasional requests to do overtime may occur. The Behavioral Tech must be physically and emotionally available to deal with emergency situations at all times. May be a need to respond to behavioral and/or medical emergency situation. The Behavioral Tech works continuously around and with others and is occasionally at risk for exposure to body fluids/blood borne pathogens. Employees in this role may be required to float to other patient care units or departments based on operational and patient care needs, provided they possess the required competencies and qualifications for the assignment. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Supervises patients at all times maintaining appropriate level of supervision as specified. Handoff communication is always performed. Performs direct patient care functions under the direction of the RN in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, and protocols. Supervising and assisting patients in daily scheduled activities, and skills trainings or practice. Following standard operating procedures and therapeutic techniques for the Program. Follows patients Individual Treatment Plan. Maintains familiarity with each patients' assessments/interventions. Utilizes appropriate therapeutic modalities and interventions to meet patient outcomes and department goals. Performs efficiently in emergency situations following established protocols. Actively promotes environmental/patient safety using effective preventative measures. Reports and documents behavioral observations, responses to care plan interventions and daily treatments as per hospital standards. Organizes and assists with structured group activities. Consistently models to patient/families appropriate and therapeutic interpersonal staff/patient interactions. Handles crisis situations in a safe, effective manner, utilizing the least restrictive, safe patient care alternative. Performs other related duties as required, assigned or directed by charge nurse. Demonstrates ability to anticipate, address and de-escalate patient distress situations prior to patients’ loss of control as designated in their treatment plans.
