Academic Transplant Hepatologist

Division of Transplant | Tufts Medical Center | Boston, Massachusetts

Tufts Medical Center is seeking a Board Certified/Board Eligible Transplant Hepatologist to join the Division of Transplant Surgery within the Department of Surgery. This is an exceptional opportunity to become part of a rapidly growing academic liver transplant program at one of New England's premier academic medical centers.

Following the successful relaunch of its Liver Transplant Program, Tufts Medical Center has achieved several significant milestones, including CMS certification of the Liver Transplant Program and approval from the Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) to launch a Living Donor Liver Transplant Program. These accomplishments underscore our commitment to delivering innovative, equitable, and high-quality transplant care while expanding access to life-saving treatment for patients with advanced liver disease throughout New England.

The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in the continued growth of the Liver Transplant Program by delivering exceptional patient care while helping strengthen relationships throughout the Tufts Medicine system and beyond. This physician will work collaboratively with community and academic providers to expand access to transplant hepatology services, enhance referral pathways, and advance a seamless, integrated approach to liver disease management.

This is an exciting opportunity to make an impact that extends well beyond the walls of Tufts Medical Center by helping shape the future of liver transplantation across our health system.

How you'll transform patient care:

  • Evaluate and manage patients with acute and chronic liver disease in both the inpatient and outpatient settings.
  • Provide comprehensive pre- and post-liver transplant care, including transplant evaluations, waitlist management, and long-term follow-up.
  • Diagnose and manage complex hepatobiliary disorders, including cirrhosis, portal hypertension, MASLD/MASH, viral hepatitis, autoimmune liver disease, hepatocellular carcinoma, and acute liver failure.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary liver transplant selection conferences and collaborate closely with transplant surgeons and the broader transplant team to deliver exceptional patient outcomes.
  • Develop individualized treatment plans utilizing the latest evidence-based therapies and clinical guidelines.
  • Foster strong relationships with physicians and clinical leaders across Tufts Medicine to enhance collaboration, strengthen referral pathways, and improve access to specialized hepatology and transplant services.
  • Partner with community physicians and regional referral providers to support the continued growth of the Liver Transplant Program and expand access to care throughout the region.
  • Serve as a clinical ambassador for Tufts Medicine by participating in outreach initiatives, educational programs, and multidisciplinary collaborations that elevate the visibility and impact of our Liver Transplant Program.
  • Collaborate with physicians, advanced practice clinicians, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, and transplant coordinators to deliver coordinated, patient-centered care.
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives, program development, and multidisciplinary conferences that support the continued advancement of transplant services.
  • Teach and mentor fellows, residents, medical students, and advanced practice learners through Tufts University School of Medicine.
  • Participate in clinical research and scholarly activities aligned with your academic interests.

Who you are:

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Gastroenterology.
  • Fellowship trained in Transplant Hepatology.
  • Eligible for medical licensure in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts.
  • Passion for delivering compassionate, patient-centered care to individuals with advanced liver disease.
  • Demonstrated commitment to collaboration, relationship building, and expanding access to specialty care across an integrated health system.
  • Interest in academic medicine, medical education, research, and multidisciplinary collaboration.
  • Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.

Why Join Our Program?

  • Join a rapidly growing academic liver transplant program during an exciting period of expansion and innovation.
  • Be part of a CMS-certified Liver Transplant Program with an approved Living Donor Liver Transplant Program, helping expand access to life-saving transplant care throughout New England.
  • Help shape the continued growth of liver transplantation across an integrated academic and community health system.
  • Collaborate with nationally recognized transplant surgeons, hepatologists, gastroenterologists, and multidisciplinary specialists dedicated to exceptional patient outcomes.
  • Practice at the principal teaching affiliate of Tufts University School of Medicine, with opportunities for academic appointment, research, teaching, and professional growth.
  • Care for a diverse and medically complex patient population while helping define the future of transplant hepatology at Tufts Medicine.
