Position Details:

The Opportunity:

The WSU Nuclear Science Center is seeking an individual to support research on chemical and isotope separations, characterize chemical and nuclear processes, and instruct at least one undergraduate course in nuclear science per semester. Research projects include: isotope production, nuclear energy production, and nuclear fuel cycle. The Radiochemist position is responsible for identifying and defining nuclear-related research problems, designing research approaches, securing extramural funding, and identifying and defining research problems. This work will require a broad range of analytical techniques and include handling radiological materials, collecting and interpreting experimental data and adapting experiments to meet project objectives. The candidate will be working with radioactive materials and chemicals in laboratories that are in radiological controlled areas, including radiation areas, radioactive material areas, and contamination areas. The Radiochemist will safely prepare, handle, complete radiometric separations, and analyze samples that can be radioactive, collect, analyze and interpret research data, and ensure quality control, safe work habits, make improvements to techniques and interpretation.

Additional Information:

This is a full time (100% FTE), permanent position. Overtime eligibility will be determined based on final salary placement

Monthly Salary:

$4,942.10 - $7,567.00 | Commensurate with experience and qualifications

In accordance with RCW 49.58.110, the above salary reflects the full salary range for this position. Individual placement within the range is based on the candidate’s current experience, education, skills, and abilities related to the position.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and four (4) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. A PhD in a scientific or engineering field may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required work experience. Any combination of relevant education and professional experience may be substituted for the educational requirement on a yearforyear basis.

  • Satisfactory Background Check.

  • Must be a U.S. citizen at time of hire.

  • Within 6 months of hire, must complete the CPR, first aide, and AED trainings.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • PhD degree in radiochemistry and at least two years of laboratory/professional research experience in radiometric separations. Knowledge of stoichiometry, sample preparation, chemical separations, and laboratory/experimental techniques. Experience with preparing quality data and reports. Experience handling radioactive materials and working in a nuclear environment.
