DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW
Information Technology supports an inclusive community of GBH staff working across Broadcasting, Content Creation, Education, Digital, Assistive Technologies, Local News, and Administrative functions. Roughly 70 staff work across six teams within the department. We value creative problem solving, respectful candor, teamwork, and continuous improvement. We build, improve, launch, automate, and repair the systems that keep GBH operating.
JOB OVERVIEW
The Network Engineer is responsible for the operation, maintenance, monitoring, and continuous improvement of GBH's enterprise network infrastructure. The primary focus of this role is ensuring that network services remain reliable, secure, and performant across GBH's corporate, broadcast, and cloud environments.
GBH operates a mixed technology environment including Macintosh, Windows, Linux, Cisco IOS, and broadcast-specific systems. Our network infrastructure is primarily built on Arista networking platforms with Fortinet and Cisco technologies supporting various enterprise and broadcast functions.
This role combines operational excellence, troubleshooting, project implementation, and collaboration with colleagues across Information Technology, Broadcast Engineering, and Production Operations.
RESPONSIBILITIES
Maintain the availability, performance, and security of GBH's wired, wireless, WAN, VPN, and cloud-connected network infrastructure.
Monitor network health, performance metrics, and alerting systems; proactively identify and remediate issues before they impact operations.
Troubleshoot and resolve network incidents, serving as a technical resource for infrastructure-related issues.
Manage and prioritize network support requests and ticket queues while working closely with end users, broadcast engineers, software developers, and other technology teams.
Install, configure, test, and support network hardware including switches, routers, firewalls, and wireless infrastructure.
Implement network changes and upgrades following established change management practices.
Support broadcast audio, video, and media-over-IP networking systems.
Contribute to network design reviews and deployment planning for new services and infrastructure upgrades.
Create and maintain accurate network documentation, diagrams, and operational procedures.
Participate in root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts following network incidents.
Assist with network automation, monitoring, and operational efficiency initiatives.
Participate in on-call rotation and provide support for critical incidents during evenings, weekends, or holidays when necessary.
SKILL SET
Strong troubleshooting and analytical skills with the ability to independently diagnose and resolve network issues.
Solid written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to collaborate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.
Strong understanding of:
IP addressing and subnetting
VLANs, Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking
802.1X Network Access Control
TCP/IP networking fundamentals
Experience with:
DNS, DHCP, SNMP, RADIUS, NetFlow
Routing protocols including BGP and OSPF
Network monitoring and performance analysis tools
ACLs, QoS, route filtering, and traffic management
Familiarity with wireless networking, troubleshooting, and administration.
Knowledge of VPN technologies including IPSec and SSL VPNs.
Experience supporting fiber and copper network infrastructure.
Familiarity with Arista, Cisco, and/or Fortinet networking platforms.
Experience with CloudVision, FortiManager, or similar network management platforms is preferred.
Exposure to network automation, scripting, or zero-touch provisioning is a plus.
Familiarity with broadcast video or audio-over-IP environments is desirable.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Bachelor's Degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, Engineering, or equivalent work experience required.
Four (4) to seven (7) years of network engineering or network administration experience.
Experience supporting enterprise-grade Layer 2 and Layer 3 networking in a multi-site environment.
Experience configuring and troubleshooting routing, switching, wireless, and security technologies.
Experience supporting cloud-connected networking environments, including AWS, is preferred.
Demonstrated ability to independently manage technical projects and drive issues to resolution.
CCNA, ACMP, NSE, or equivalent vendor certification preferred.
Progress toward CCNP, ACSP, or equivalent advanced certification is a plus.
