Description

All students in Frederick County Public Schools are provided with health services in the school setting. It is through this joint effort between Frederick County Public Schools and Frederick County Health Department that the School Health Services provides the link between health and education. This link is the key to the success of every student in Frederick County. Health and education go hand in hand and both are essential components for the success of every student in the school setting.
 
We are seeking positive and professional staff with a passion for caring for children to join our diverse School Health Services team.


Non-exempt (compensatory and/or overtime eligible); full-time during the school year/approximately 10 months per year; 35 hours per week; Monday - Friday; full benefits


Multiple Vacancies 


This position provides a wide variety of para-professional health services to students, school staff and, on occasion, community members in the school setting. Most work-hours will be assigned at a specific school; however some travel may be required for substitutions at other schools or for special assignments; school assignment is based on program needs.  Supervision is received from the RN - School Health.


NOTE: The upper pay range reflects possible wage rates for internal County transfers and promotions, which are calculated per County policy.  For external hires, offers are made at the base wage rate.

  • Interact extensively with students while providing routine care for minor and acute illnesses and chronic disorders
  • Provide immediate care for accidents and injuries ranging from minor to life-threatening
  • Provide appropriate treatment of ill or injured persons
  • Establish and maintain an up-to-date electronic student health record system
  • Assist with efforts to ensure an adequate program for the prevention and control of communicable diseases
  • Encourage parents/guardians to follow through with recommended health care
  • Administer medications and perform specific treatments as ordered by a health care provider and delegated by the RN-School Health, observe for medication and treatment side effects and take further action as indicated
  • Perform lice screenings as directed by the RN-School Health
  • Communicate health-related information as appropriate (e.g. drug/alcohol situations, suicide threats, medication/treatment orders, pregnancy concerns, accidents, etc.)
  • Assist with follow-up of long-term absences
  • Assist with vision and hearing screenings and other health screening programs
  • Arrange appointments and take messages for the RN-School Health
  • Assist with record-keeping, report preparation and inventory of health supplies
  • Perform other related duties as required

The qualifications/requirements, knowledge/skills/abilities and physical requirements or working conditions described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:

  • Minimum age 18 years by September 21, 2026
  • High school graduation or the equivalent
  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in health care support, school health services, or a related field for the job
  • Current CNA certification issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing

KNOWLEDGE / SKILLS / ABILITIES: 
A successful incumbent operating in this role displays the following:
  • Ability to become certified in CPR, First Aid, and CMT by a recognized certification body (e.g. American Red Cross, Heart Association, National Safety Council) during the orientation process
  • Strong math and clerical skills, with ability to accurately prepare and maintain health records and program documentation
  • Strong and effective spoken and written (English) communication skills
  • Ability to effectively organize work, determine priorities and complete assigned duties with minimal supervision
  • Ability to work with sensitive and personal information and maintain appropriate confidentiality
  • Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, students, parents/guardians and the general public
  • Ability to effectively provide health care and services in compliance with MD laws, rules and regulations governing School Health
  • Ability to effectively access and utilize computerized systems to enter and maintain related data and statistics

PREFERENCE MAY BE GIVEN FOR:

  • Pediatric healthcare experience in a hospital, pediatric clinic, community health or mental health setting
  • Current CMT certification issued by the Maryland Board of Nursing

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / WORKING CONDITIONS:
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to frequently stoop and drive; occasionally climb, crawl, and lift between 20-50 pounds; rarely push over 40 pounds.
  • While working in this position, the employee is required to constantly work indoors; frequently potentially exposed to infectious diseases; occasionally walks on uneven ground and is required to wear protective equipment.

  • Failure to meet or maintain the minimum qualifications or additional requirements may result in disciplinary action up to and including termination
  • Available to respond on-call as essential personnel in the event of an emergency situation
  • Ability to provide own transportation
  • This position is subject to random drug testing
  • All costs incurred by the hired employee for the purpose of obtaining and maintaining the required CNA and CMT certifications will be the responsibility of the employee
  • Persons currently licensed as RN or LPN cannot be considered for placement as Health Room Technician, CNA/CMT.  Frederick County Schools only permit Health Room Technician, CNA/CMT to take well-specified actions in certain medical situations; however persons with RN/LPN license are required by that licensing to take other actions in those same medical situations.  This conflict prevents placing an RN or LPN as a Health Room Technician, CNA/CMT.


EXAMINATION PROCESS (may include):
1.  An evaluation of training and experience
2. One or more interviews
3. A pre-employment physical examination that includes screening for communicable diseases (immunization inoculations may be necessary)     
4. A pre-employment drug test without marijuana
5. A pre-employment fingerprint support background investigation  
6. An employment history review in accordance with §6–113 of the Maryland Education Article
