Linux Systems Engineer

We're seeking someone to join as Linux System Engineer to support our environment that consists of a mixture of open source and in-house written Python components which will be modernized and replaced to ensure the continued delivery of a stable and secure infrastructure with increased agility and flexibility.

This is a Linux Systems Engineer role at Vice President level, which is part of the job family responsible for maintaining and improving Linux infrastructure for Morgan Stanley's algorithmic and low latency trading servers. The group is involved in evaluation, certification, integration, and maintenance of numerous products, including hardware, Red Hat Linux, configuration management, system services (DNS, DHCP, NTP, etc.), and a variety of in-house developed tools.

What you'll do in the role:

• Manage, deploy and debug large scale production environments, collaborating closely with software engineers and reliability engineers working for the Electronic Trading business unit.

• Participate in a global, follow the sun, oncall rotation for production issues. During incidents, you will lead the technical troubleshooting and communicate with other internal stakeholders such as production support teams, app developers, and technology management.

• Write and maintain documentation for systems, processes and procedures.

• Configure Linux systems using git, CI/CD pipelines and the configuration-as-code paradigm.

• Write new, and maintain existing, automation scripts in Python.

• Interact with global colleagues in a variety of locations and teams to deliver cross-disciplinary technology infrastructure solutions for the business.

• Contribute to the continuous improvement of the server estate and operating model by speaking in global departmental forums such as Design and Architecture boards, blameless post-mortems and sprint prioritisation calls.
   

What you'll bring to the role:

• 7+ years of Enterprise Level Experience in Large Distributed Environment. You are a self-starter, able to act like an owner, prioritize requests, collaborate with others, and manage ambiguity.

• Knowledge of Linux Systems - Hardware and Automated Build including Automated Lights Out Management.

• Must be comfortable building systems from scratch, changing configuration and amending code-paths.

• Understanding of kernel bypass and how it relates to latency sensitive devices. Famliarty with Linux kernel internals and performance tuning would be beneficial.

• Knowledge of TCP/IP, experience with networking and security concepts, implementation, and troubleshooting.

• Experience with monitoring tools and solutions.

• Proven analytical and troubleshooting skills in a highly visible faced paced enterprise environment.

• Coding experience preferably with Python.

• Experience working on shared code bases using best practices in CI, git, release management and change control.
