PURPOSE OF POSITION

The Enrolled Nurse Level 1 as a member of a multidisciplinary nursing team, participates in the planning, implementation and evaluation of nursing care. Under the supervision of a Registered Nurse, the Enrolled Nurse delivers quality evidence-based nursing care within their scope of practice.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

2.1    Mission

  • Caregivers are required to act in accordance with the standards of behaviour outlined in the SJGHC Code of Conduct document.

2.2    Patient Care

  • Works in consultation and co-operation with other care team members to provide care according to the physical and emotional needs of the patient and their families.
  • Assist in the planning, implementation and evaluation of the day to day mental health and basic physical care requirements of patients.
  • Participate in patient assessments, including mental health, risk assessment and management, history taking and developing comprehensive nursing care plans. Ensuring risks are documented and appropriate interventions, referrals are facilitated.
  • Advise and educate patients regarding treatment and recovery in relevant specialty.
  • Utilise and promote reflective practice models, such as Clinical Supervision to promote best practice, heighten awareness and development of self and colleagues.
  • Utilise appropriate de-escalation skills to prevent aggressive behaviour.
  • Responsibly and effectively manage resources used in the provision of health care.
  • Participate in medication administration procedures according to statutory and organisational guidelines under the supervision of the RN.
  • Observe record and report to the Nurse Unit Manager / Team Leader/ Clinical Nurse or relevant supervisor.
  • Recognise the rights of all patients under our care.
  • Maintain appropriate documentation of the health management of patients for professional clinical and legal purposes.
  • Be competent under supervision in the management of medical emergencies, physical assessment and crisis intervention.

2.3    Governance, Safety and Quality

  • Work within a Recovery Model patient-focused framework.
  • Contribute, within knowledge and skill level, to the maintenance of a safe environment through prevention, surveillance, monitoring and early intervention.
  • Performs all duties in accordance with SJGHC policies and procedures.
  • Comply with and demonstrate a positive commitment to Regulations, Acts and National Standards relevant to Nursing.
  • Ensure own knowledge, practice and philosophy of care is consistent with the requirements of the National Standards

2.4    Professional Conduct

  • To work within the Enrolled Nurse SCOPE OF PRACTICE
  • Maintain the privacy and confidentiality of both patients and caregivers at all times.

2.4    Professional Development

  • Work within clinical professional guidelines, regulations and SJOGHC policies, protocols and procedures.
  • Attend all mandatory training as required.
  • Attends relevant training sessions offered by SJGHC.  Recognises the necessity to continually develop skills and acquire additional knowledge appropriate to the position.
  • Actively seeks opportunities for further professional development.
  • Participates in staff development programs and relevant meetings at both unit and hospital level, e.g. Unit meetings, Committee meetings.
  • Seeks feedback on performance and provides same to colleagues.

All other reasonable duties at directed by the Nurse Unit Manager or Supervisor

3.      Team Work

  • Participate as a valued team member promoting and contributing to a supportive team environment.

4.      Communication

  • Communicate effectively with all customers and patients using the appropriate channels, utilising appropriate formal and informal channels of communication.

5.      Quality and Risk

  • Participate in, contribute to and implement quality improvement and risk management into all aspects of service.
  • Actively participates in quality improvement initiatives.

6.      Occupational Health and Safety

  • Adhere to all applicable St John of God Health Care policies and guidelines.
  • Take reasonable care of themselves and others.
  • Not to interfere, bypass or misuse any system or equipment provided for health, safety and welfare purposes.
  • Take all actions to avoid, eliminate or minimize hazards.
  • Seek information on any work they undertake and be aware of the risks and hazards associated with their work.
  • Report all incidents / hazards / injuries.
  • Assist in completion of incidents / hazards / injuries reports.
  • Participate in the documentation of Risk Assessments and Standard Operating Procedures for activities that could pose an OHS risk.
  • Raise OHS issues with appropriate caregivers and take part in OHS consultative arrangements.
  • Use Personal Protective Equipment as required and directed.
  • Attend all mandatory and recommended OHS training as scheduled by Group Services.
  • Promote a positive safety culture within their areas by demonstrating a positive commitment to OHS.

7.      Environment

  • The caregiver, recognising St John of God Health Care commitment to responsible environmental stewardship, will support the organisational Environmental goals in performance of all duties. Ensure a safe and clean environment is maintained for caregivers and patients.

8.      Safety and protection of children, young people and adults at risk

  • Ensure that Child Safe practices are inherent in working with children, young people and adults at risk in all areas of service delivery, including on and off location.
  • Ensure that children, young people and adults at risk are aware of their rights to a safe and abuse free environment and are aware of how to report any concerns.
  • Immediately report any suspected, observed or disclosed abuse in line with the reporting processes, to line manager with view to it being reported to relevant protective authority.
  • Work with children / young people and adults at risk in a way that is respectful and appropriate to any cultural / diverse background and ensure a safe environment is in place.
