Role Purpose: To provide first-line leadership for the delivery of underwriting regulatory returns, control oversight, staff training and stakeholder engagement. The role ensures day-to-day activity is completed accurately, on time and with clear evidence, while helping to deliver practical improvements agreed with the Underwriting Assurance Manager.

Role Focus

We are looking for an experienced and motivated Team Lead to join the Underwriting Assurance team. This is a hands-on leadership role with responsibility for guiding Analysts and Interns, supporting high-quality delivery and helping the team provide effective assurance across underwriting activity. The role offers strong visibility across the business and the opportunity to develop your leadership skills while making a practical impact on controls, reporting quality and ways of working.

Key Responsibilities

Regulatory Reporting and Governance

  • Coordinate and oversee key underwriting regulatory returns, including ATIA, GAREAT, NNPP and other governance returns as required.
  • Work with Underwriting, Operations, Finance, Compliance, Tax, Data Analytics and other stakeholders to obtain inputs and resolve issues.
  • Maintain clear procedures, checklists and supporting evidence for key reporting activities.
  • Identify and escalate data quality issues, unclear ownership, missed dependencies or reporting risks.

Team Leadership and Development

  • Provide day-to-day leadership, workload allocation and support for Analysts and Interns.
  • Review work and provide constructive feedback to improve accuracy, judgement and confidence.
  • Support onboarding, coaching, mentoring and knowledge sharing across the team.
  • Promote cross-training and a supportive environment where issues are raised early and addressed constructively.

Controls Oversight and Analysis

  • Manage underwriting file reviews, including planning, quality checks, results reporting and action tracking.
  • Review findings to ensure they are accurate, balanced and supported by clear evidence.
  • Identify themes, recurring issues and opportunities to strengthen controls or processes.
  • Support constructive feedback to Underwriters and stakeholders, escalating material or repeated issues where appropriate.

Process Improvement

  • Identify opportunities to make processes clearer, more efficient and less manual.
  • Support agreed improvements, automation opportunities and new ways of working.
  • Help embed changes through updated procedures, training and follow-up checks.

About You

Essential Experience

  • Experience in insurance, underwriting operations, regulatory reporting, governance, controls, compliance or assurance.
  • Experience leading, coaching, mentoring or supervising colleagues.
  • Strong analytical skills, attention to detail and confidence reviewing evidence, reporting outputs and findings.
  • Good communication and stakeholder management skills.
  • Ability to manage competing priorities, maintain quality and escalate issues appropriately.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Excel, Word and PowerPoint.

Desirable Experience

  • Exposure to regulatory returns such as ATIA, GAREAT, NNPP, surplus lines, contract certainty or broker remuneration.
  • Experience developing training materials, guidance notes, process documents or stakeholder workshops.
  • Familiarity with Power BI, SharePoint, Microsoft Lists, workflow tools or Microsoft Copilot.
  • Experience supporting process improvement or controlled change in an operational environment.

Why join us?

  • Take on a visible leadership role spanning underwriting assurance, regulatory reporting and control oversight.
  • Develop your people leadership skills by coaching Analysts and Interns and helping shape a collaborative team environment.
  • Build broad business knowledge through regular engagement with Underwriting, Operations, Finance, Compliance, Tax and Data Analytics.
  • Influence practical improvements to processes, controls, data quality and ways of working.
  • Receive structured support to build knowledge of underwriting assurance, regulatory returns, controls and internal processes.
  • Be part of a supportive team that values ownership, curiosity and continuous improvement.

Success in the Role

You will be successful in this role if you enjoy leading others, maintaining high standards of delivery, building constructive stakeholder relationships and identifying practical ways to improve how work is done.
