ABOUT WCN

Wildlife Conservation Network’s mission is to protect endangered wildlife by supporting conservationists who ensure wildlife and people coexist and thrive. Within WCN, the Women for Wildlife (WfW) program supports conservation partners in Africa to implement gender-focused programs to achieve conservation benefits through women’s empowerment.

ABOUT THE ROLE

The Wildlife Conservation Network (WCN) created the WfW grants program to support their partners in Africa to build and strengthen their gender-focused programs for the dual goals of women‘s empowerment and conservation benefit. Partners who are successful in applying for WfW funding will join a Community of Learning for the purpose of:

  • Encouraging and sharing innovative and holistic approaches to conservation and gender-related challenges,
  • Supporting and mentoring women and female leaders working in the field, and facilitating partnerships and mutual capacity building between organizations
  • Gathering data, knowledge and lessons that will inform further rounds of women-focused granting and grantee management
  • Tracking and evaluating progress and impact of grantee activities as it pertains to women- focussed programming
  • Creating and implementing best practices for gender rights and equity in conservation and development.
  • Building capacity within partners for effective and ethical gender-related programming.

Community of Learning activities will take place over a 12 month period and include:

  • An initial qualitative needs assessment with each incoming grantee to assess strengths, areas of expertise, and self identified areas for growth in relation to gender-focused programming
  • Creation and maintenance of a basic digital platform (such as a Whatsapp or Slack channel), and facilitation of communication and engagement on the platform to promote sustained information-gathering and sharing of knowledge between grantees
  • Creation of a pathway of learning for grantees, including a remote curriculum and facilitated practical work that increases the capacity of organizations to carry out grounded and effective gender empowerment work
  • Hosting of 8 virtual gatherings
  • design and implementation of methods for impact evaluation of grantee’s projects and the network overall, based on goals specific to the grantee as well as overarching goals of the WoW initiative.
  • Design and implementation of methods for self assessment of gender equity and gender-related rights in the implementation of grant-supported projects and within grantee organizations.
