As a MEP Project Engineer (Plumbing/Fire Protection), you will join our Building Services team in either our Westwood, Woburn, or Westfield, MA offices, where you’ll play a key role in delivering vital infrastructure projects across the Northeast. Our Building ServicesTeam and ProjectsOur Building Services team works on commercial, industrial, academic, municipal, healthcare, and water/wastewater facilities. Project work may include potable water systems, sanitary and vent systems, storm drainage, natural gas systems, hot water generation and distribution, backflow prevention, plumbing fixture layouts, specialty piping, commercial kitchen plumbing, laboratory plumbing, process-related building services, fire protection water service, sprinkler coordination, and system upgrades in both new and existing buildings.

What You’ll Be Doing

As a valuable part of our Building Services Team, a MEP Project Engineer (Plumbing/Fire Protection) will support the planning, design, coordination, and construction administration of plumbing systems for facilities throughout New England. You will work closely with mechanical, electrical, fire protection, structural, civil, architectural, and owner teams to deliver coordinated designs that meet code requirements, client goals, and project needs.

Responsibilities include:

  • Design plumbing systems for renovations, additions, new construction, facility upgrades, and infrastructure improvement projects
  • Prepare plumbing drawings, specifications, calculations, schedules, details, reports, and cost estimates
  • Design and coordinate potable water, hot water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty piping systems
  • Evaluate existing plumbing systems and develop recommendations for repairs, replacement, capacity improvements, code compliance, and long-term planning
  • Perform field investigations and existing conditions assessments in active facilities
  • Coordinate plumbing design with HVAC, electrical, fire protection, architectural, structural, and civil disciplines
  • Support fire protection design and coordination, including sprinkler system coordination, fire protection water service, standpipe systems, fire pumps, and code reviews, as applicable
  • Assist with public bid documents, permitting, agency coordination, and construction phase support
  • Review submittals, respond to RFIs, and participate in site observations and punch list reviews
  • Participate in client meetings and internal design coordination meetings
  • Support project managers with scope, schedule, budget, and deliverable tracking

What You’ll Need  

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Architectural Engineering, Fire Protection Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent building systems design experience

  • Plumbing design experience required

  • 5+ years of plumbing design experience in a consulting engineering, AEC, or building design environment

  • Experience designing plumbing systems for commercial, industrial, academic, municipal, healthcare, or water/wastewater facilities

  • Working knowledge of plumbing codes, building codes, energy codes, and applicable industry standards

  • Experience with potable water, hot water, sanitary waste and vent, storm drainage, natural gas, and specialty piping systems

  • Ability to prepare coordinated construction documents, specifications, calculations, and design narratives

  • Experience performing field surveys and evaluating existing building systems

  • Ability to coordinate effectively with architects, owners, contractors, and internal MEP design teams

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

  • Familiarity with Revit, AutoCAD, or similar design tools.

Preferred Requirements

  • Fire protection design or coordination experience

  • Professional Engineer license or Engineer-in-Training certification

  • Experience with NFPA standards, sprinkler systems, standpipes, fire pumps, and fire protection water service design

  • Experience with public sector, higher education, industrial, water, or wastewater facility projects

  • Experience with renovations and phased construction in occupied facilities

  • Experience with public bidding requirements and New England permitting processes

  • CPD, CFPS, NICET, LEED, or other relevant professional credentials

  • Interest in growing into greater project management, client-facing, or technical leadership responsibilities
