The McGill University Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences (FMHS) and the McGill University Health Centre (MUHC) invite applications for a full-time position at the rank of Associate or Full Professor as Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, McGill University Health Centre and Chair of the McGill University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology. The MUHC is an adult and paediatric academic health centre affiliated with McGill’s Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences with an international reputation for excellence in clinical care, research and education. It has a responsibility for tertiary paediatric and adult services for the University Integrated Health and Social Services Network of McGill (Réseau universitaire intégré de santé et de services sociaux McGill) across a vast territory of Québec in addition to providing comprehensive healthcare services to its local community. Patients receive care in English and French, and through interpretative services, a host of other languages as may be necessary to support the multicultural population it serves. Responsibilities as Chair of the McGill University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology

We are seeking a respected academic physician with demonstrated leadership in clinical care, education, research, and administration to lead one of Canada’s premier academic departments in women’s health. The successful candidate will be expected to provide strategic and operational leadership for the Department’s academic, teaching, and research missions throughout the McGill network.

As Chair of the McGill University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, the successful candidate will be expected to strengthen the Department’s teaching and research environments through strategic recruitment, mentorship, and faculty career development, support educational leaders in postgraduate and undergraduate medicine and research-based graduate studies, and strengthen collaborations within the FMHS and across the University and its affiliated health network. As a leader within McGill’s ecosystem, the Chair will champion women’s health and will seek opportunities for synergy across sites and activities, while supporting established and encouraging emerging areas of excellence.

The successful candidate is an energetic and thoughtful leader with demonstrated abilities to manage change, encourage excellence in complex, high-stakes environments and able to foster a sense of belonging and shared purpose within the organization. Applicants for this position should have substantive experience in both research and teaching at a high level. Applicants should have experience in administration and leadership, with the ability to build effective teams, mentor colleagues, staff, and students, and engage with clinical and community partners, academic institutions, and governmental agencies.

The successful candidate is responsible for the academic leadership (i.e., academic, clinical, educational, and research activities) and advancement of the Department across its various subspecialties and programs, including all McGill teaching hospitals and affiliated research institutes. Responsibilities include:

• Assume strategic, operational, academic, and financial responsibilities for the McGill University Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology;

• Provide effective mentoring and guidance on academic appointments, promotion, and tenure and faculty development;

• Assure inclusive internal governance to effectively coordinate the variety of activities, sites, and priorities of the Department;

• Collaborate with Program Directors on education and training matters

• Build partnerships with sister units sharing common interests;

• Promote excellence in research, teaching, and clinical care;

• Represent the Department in Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences fora, including the Faculty Leadership Council and the School of Medicine Clinical Leadership Council;

• Oversee undergraduate and postgraduate medical education programs in collaboration with the Associate Deans and program directors;

• Work collaboratively with hospital research institute directors to strengthen innovation and research;

• Coordinate academic planning and recruitment across the McGill RUISSS network (Réseau universitaire intégré de santé et de services sociaux) and affiliated hospitals to foster successful academic programs through partnerships and complementarity, ensuring hospital recruitments outside the MUHC carry the formal recommendation of the hiring institution's Obstetrician and Gynecologist-in-Chief;

• Serve as a dedicated advocate for faculty and staff resources, driving administrative and research support initiatives across University, MUHC, and Santé Québec leadership.

Responsibilities as Chief of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, MUHC

The Chief is responsible for the quality, organization, and strategic planning of clinical services at the MUHC. Responsibilities include:

• Ensuring high-quality patient care and alignment of departmental clinical activities with institutional priorities;

• Providing leadership in the development and integration of clinical programs across MUHC sites;

• Ensuring each member of the MUHC Department has clearly defined clinical and academic responsibilities, reviewed at least once every two years;

• Working collaboratively with MUHC leadership and other department chiefs;

• Reporting to the Associate Director of Medical and Professional Services regarding clinical organization, resource allocation, and departmental performance;

• Reports to the Chair of the Council of Physicians, Dentists, Pharmacists and Midwives (CPDPMW) of the MUHC to ensure high-quality patient care;

• Supporting strategic planning and fostering integration between clinical and academic missions across McGill teaching hospitals;

• Advance inter-institutional alignment and strategic synergy across the affiliated teaching hospitals, leveraging each site’s distinct operational strengths to optimize their collective academic, clinical, and research missions.

Qualifications and Education Requirements

Candidates should ideally:

• Hold a medical degree with specialist certification in Obstetrics and Gynecology;

• Be eligible for licensure in the Province of Quebec;

• Have demonstrated leadership abilities, a proven track-record in research and teaching, and the skills and experience needed to lead diverse teams in a collaborative, collegial manner;

• Have a record of success in managing complex units and multi-site clinical services, and the experience in navigating institutional, academic, and public policy channels to make progress on multifaceted issues;

• Be an effective proponent of integrated research, exceptional clinical care, and innovative, inclusive teaching;

• Show a strong commitment to undergraduate and postgraduate medical education;

• Have a record of research excellence linked seamlessly with excellence in clinical care and a clear understanding of research with clinical-translational impact;

• Demonstrate excellence in organization, interdisciplinary collaboration, network development, and human resource management;

• Have a track record of effective and synergistic collaborations;

• Knowledge of the Quebec healthcare system will be considered an asset;

• Bilingual language skills (French and English) are preferred, or a commitment to acquire the necessary language skills to practice medicine in Quebec. Candidates should be able to interact in English and in French with patients, families, and health care professionals.

The successful candidate will also be expected to be actively involved in all aspects of McGill’s academic mission (i.e., research, teaching, supervision of students and residents, and involvement in academic and administrative committees).
