Position Summary

The Lead Life Skills Specialist provides direct care, supervision, and structured support to adults receiving substance use disorder and behavioral health treatment services. This role helps foster a safe, therapeutic, and recovery-oriented environment while teaching essential life skills, supporting treatment goals, and encouraging client engagement in programming and recovery activities.

The ideal candidate is a compassionate leader with behavioral health experience, strong communication skills, and a passion for helping individuals develop the tools needed for long-term recovery and independent living.

Key Responsibilities

Client Care & Recovery Support

  • Provide direct care and support to adults receiving substance use and behavioral health treatment.
  • Monitor client behavior and ensure client safety, well-being, and program compliance.
  • Support a structured therapeutic milieu focused on recovery, accountability, and personal growth.
  • Encourage participation in treatment services, recovery programming, and recreational activities.
  • Provide orientation and support to newly admitted clients.

Treatment & Group Facilitation

  • Assist with the implementation of individualized treatment plans.
  • Observe, document, and communicate client progress and concerns with the treatment team.
  • Facilitate and co-lead life skills, recovery-focused, psychoeducational, and coping skills groups.
  • Teach daily living skills, communication skills, relapse prevention strategies, and healthy coping mechanisms.
  • Reinforce recovery principles and foundational concepts of 12-Step programs including Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) and Narcotics Anonymous (NA).

Communication & Documentation

  • Maintain accurate, timely, and professional documentation.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, treatment team members, families, care managers, and community partners.
  • Complete administrative and clerical tasks that support clinical operations and client care.
  • Maintain confidentiality and comply with HIPAA regulations.

Transportation & Program Support

  • Assist with transportation to appointments, recovery meetings, and approved community activities.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, safe, and therapeutic environment.
  • Participate in staff meetings, required training programs, and professional development opportunities.
  • Follow all safety, security, infection control, licensing, and accreditation standards.

Qualifications

Required

  • High school diploma or GED equivalent.
  • 2+ years of experience in behavioral health, addiction treatment, mental health, or a related field.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.

Preferred

  • Associate degree in Behavioral Health, Human Services, Psychology, Social Work, Counseling, or a related field.
  • Experience facilitating groups in a treatment or recovery setting.
  • Knowledge of substance use disorder treatment and recovery support services.

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities

Successful candidates will demonstrate:

  • Knowledge of behavioral health and substance use disorder treatment.
  • Understanding of HIPAA, licensing regulations, CARF standards, and professional boundaries.
  • Strong group facilitation and teaching abilities.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making capabilities.
  • Ability to remain calm and responsive during crisis situations.
  • Strong organizational, documentation, and time-management skills.
  • Flexibility, professionalism, and commitment to continuous learning.
