Requirements

Job Overview

Assistant Director, Advising, Office of Career Strategy – Georgetown University will report to the Director – 1L Team. The Assistant Director within the Office of Career Strategy (“OCS”) will have the primary responsibility of advising, creating resources for, and providing programming to an assigned cohort of students across our 1L, 2L, and 3L classes. Reporting to a Director, the Assistant Director will counsel students on basic job search skills (e.g., resume and cover letter creation); differentiating between and applying to legal employers; interviewing techniques; networking and role sourcing; and developing a career plan. This position focuses on supporting students during through all years of law school including obtaining and succeeding in summer positions – as well as throughout the On-Campus Interview (OCI) process (if the student chooses to participate).

Additional duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Creating and implementing in-person, hybrid, and recorded programs related to the job search;

  • Crafting newsletters, handouts, website text, and other instructional information related to job search strategies and best practices;

  • Counseling individual students, including those from groups historically underrepresented in the law, on strategies to successfully apply for summer and post-grad jobs;

  • Collaborating with relevant Georgetown offices, student groups, state bar administrators, and other outside organizations to supports students’ job search success;

  • Assisting with additional OCS/OPICS programs that support Georgetown Law students and graduates.

At Georgetown Law’s Office of Career Strategy (OCS), we find meaning each day in helping junior professionals figure out a future that excites them. And we do it in an environment that places a premium on flexibility and autonomy for our team members. If we are speaking your language so far, read on to learn more about our two core principles and what we’re looking for in a new team member.

Core Principle 1: OCS is mission-driven. We are looking for people-centered professionals to join an office that is motivated by the daily interactions with creative, smart, driven, and curious students. We take pride in providing a service to those students that allows them to create their unique career plan, tailored to their specific needs and interests. In doing so, we get to experience share their excitement when a new job offer arrives or when they figure out what lights them up as a professional; and we take seriously the responsibility to help them through more challenging times.

Core Principle 2: OCS prioritizes flexibility and respects its team members’ judgment and autonomy in meeting our mission. We don’t micro-manage. We structure our office only enough to support professional development and organize work equitably and sensibly – beyond that, we trust our team members to get the job done in a way that both helps our clients (the students!) and allows them to show up authentically. Hierarchy is minimal and entrepreneurship is encouraged. We manage to take the reactivity out of client service (for most of the year!). This is an environment where you can help others and feel supported by your team.

We should mention a few more amazing benefits before we get to the part about how you can help:

  • Georgetown will pay your tuition if you enroll in any of our schools. The schools offer tuition discounts and benefits to allow you to participate in world-class continuing education within the Georgetown community.

  • You will grow as a professional here. Office leadership is committed to team members’ professional development and encourages members to share their professional development interests. Additionally, we hold regular internal training on various topics and attend industry meetings and conferences. Our office thrives on collaboration! We constantly share ideas and feedback across the office.

  • We have great benefits! Tuition discounts for children, generous retirement matching program, and copious PTO . . . that you can actually take.

Good news: we’re growing and we want to meet new team members!

Work Interactions

One of the primary goals of OCS is to ensure that every student receives individualized career planning and job search advice throughout their time at Georgetown. As a member of our team of JD advisors, this person will work with other advisors to create strategies, programming, and resources for students navigating their first year of law school and beyond. We feel strongly that these students should be provided focused services that meet them where they are. The individual will report directly to a Director, and work closely with all OCS staff. In addition, the person will have significant contact with Office of Public Interest and Community Service (“OPICS”) advisors, employers, alumni, and other administrative staff in the Law Center.

Requirements and Qualification:

  • A JD or other advanced degree;

  • A demonstrated commitment to equity and cultural sensitivity; and

  • Demonstrated ability to communicate with and listen to people from a wide variety of backgrounds.

Preferences:

  • At least two years of legal practice or years of experience working in a school administrative setting and/or at least two years of legal practice;

  • Experience counseling, coaching, or advising individuals, including peers or mentees, in navigating complex processes such as taking the bar or MPRE or applying for and receiving accommodations;

  • Ability and interest in researching and understanding bar and/or employment accommodation processes; and

  • Experience creating and implementing educational programs.
