Description
- Works diligently to build positive working relationships with Detention Manager and Detention staff members to create a positive structure, caring, safe, healthy, learning environment for our detained youth;
- Serves as an essential Detention Leadership Team Member for the implementation of detention services that help the Department achieve our Mission and Model,
- Works with the Detention Manager and other staff to implement, quality assure, and improve Detention’s programs and activities
- Works as part of a team with coworkers, parents, probation officers, services providers, and community connections to help youths
- Monitors and provides instruction of staff programs
- Attends or observes and facilitates Detention Officers participation in Detention and ensures Detention officers follow through of the Department’s implementation of the Youth’s Individualized Detention Plans;
- Serves as a faculty member of the Coconino County Juvenile Detention Training Academy and provides ongoing training to academy graduates
- Works with Detention Manager in the hiring and selection processes of new staff;
- Provides leadership, trains, and supervises Detention Living Unit staff and/or Control Room Staff and provides performance evaluations for assigned staff;
- Provides staff with regular strength-based feedback and supports staff development;
- Serves as one of Detention’s highly skilled staff in understanding the individual youth’s needs, challenges, and strengths so we can individualize our services as best possible to have the best outcomes of their detention experience;
- Works directly with staff as they work with detained youth and as needed works directly with our most challenged youth as needed;
- Ensures Detention Staffs’ implementation of youth specific services, interventions, and policy and procedures for suicide prevention and wellness restoration for identified youth;
- Ensures staff compliance and fidelity to Detention Policies & Procedures and Programs;
- Ensures safety and security of the juvenile detention facility including the facility inspections, security and safety checks;
- Facilitates conflict resolution between staff;
- Handles emergency or crisis situations, including situation review and debriefing;
- Ensures completion of intake and release procedures;
- Participates in youth grievance appeals;
- Updates records and writes accurate and detail reports as necessary;
- May appear in court to report youths’ progress;
- Ensures timeliness and accuracy within Juvenile On-Line Tracking System (JOLTS) Living Unit Post.
Essential functions of this position include but are not limited to: stand and walk for 5 or more hours; independent body mobility sufficient to bend, reach, kneel, crouch, crawl, stoop, and sit for prolonged periods of time; drive a vehicle; manual dexterity to reach, and grasp; handwrite or use computer keyboard; vision sufficient to see and read; hear and speak to communicate with customers in person and over the phone; lift or restrain a detainee, lift, push or pull materials or equipment of 50 lbs. or less.
Bachelor's degree in related field AND three years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR
Associate's degree in a related field and four years working with juveniles in a residential setting; OR
Five years working with juveniles in a residential setting: OR
Any equivalent combination of education, training and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of the position.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS:
Must submit to background check prior to hire. Persons convicted of a felony are not eligible for hire within the Juvenile Detention facility. Forty hours of orientation training are required within first month on the job. Sixteen additional hours of COJET certified training are required each year.
Must obtain an Arizona driver's license by date of hire and maintain it throughout employment. Final job offer will be contingent upon a satisfactory 5-year Arizona Motor Vehicle Report.
This position is safety sensitive.
