Description
Role Summary
Nuuly is looking for a Director of Inventory Planning and Exit Strategy. This role will lead Nuuly's Inventory Planning team and own the strategy, planning, and optimization of inventory once it has been identified to exit the Rent assortment. This leader will determine what inventory goes where, when, and why across Thrift, Marketplace, Reclectic, external resale partners, and future exit channels, with the goal of maximizing financial recovery, inventory productivity, and exit capacity.
This role combines inventory planning, financial strategy, pricing, channel optimization, business development, team leadership, and cross-functional partnership. The Director will work closely with Merchandise Planning, Buying, Finance, Marketing, Operations, Inventory Control, Engineering, Data Science, Business Analytics, and Reclectic leadership to build scalable strategies, tools, and decision frameworks for Nuuly's post-Rent inventory lifecycle.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead, develop, and build the capabilities of the Inventory Planning team, establishing clear ownership, decision rights, performance expectations, and operating cadences.
- Own inventory and financial planning across Nuuly's exit channels, including annual, seasonal, monthly, and in-season forecasts and targets.
- Determine the optimal destination, timing, volume, and sequencing of inventory across Thrift, Marketplace, Reclectic, external resale partners, and future channels.
- Develop routing strategies based on demand, inventory age and depth, seasonality, sell-through, expected recovery, margin, pricing, operational requirements, and channel capacity.
- Own exit-channel pricing strategy, including initial pricing, markdown cadence, promotional pricing, and channel-specific pricing frameworks to optimize sell-through, recovery, margin, and inventory velocity.
- Forecast future exit-channel capacity needs and develop the inventory and financial business case for additional capacity, including Reclectic store expansion.
- Evaluate Reclectic expansion against Marketplace, Thrift, external partners, and other disposition strategies to determine the highest-value use of inventory and capital.
- Maximize the productivity and scalability of existing exit channels while proactively identifying, evaluating, testing, and scaling new channels, partnerships, and business models.
- Partner with Engineering, Buying, Data Science, and Analytics to define scalable inventory-routing, forecasting, pricing, and decision-support capabilities.
- Create a closed-loop feedback process so exit-channel performance informs future routing, pricing, forecasting, buying, and lifecycle decisions.
- Partner closely with Merchandise Planning, which will continue to own Rent demand, assortment planning, Rent inventory productivity, and the determination of when inventory should be designated obsolete.
Role Qualifications
- 10+ years of progressive experience in inventory planning, merchandise planning, financial planning, retail strategy, e-commerce, resale, or a related discipline.
- Significant leadership experience developing teams and influencing senior cross-functional partners.
- Deep understanding of inventory planning, forecasting, sell-through, inventory aging, margin, markdowns, pricing, and inventory productivity.
- Strong financial acumen with the ability to evaluate inventory decisions based on both financial and operational outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to use complex data to identify opportunities, challenge assumptions, and make clear business recommendations.
- Experience evaluating or developing new channels, marketplaces, partnerships, or revenue opportunities strongly preferred.
- Experience partnering with Engineering, Buying, Data Science, and Analytics to translate business needs into scalable technology solutions.
- Strong understanding of e-commerce, marketplace, outlet, off-price, resale, or recommerce dynamics preferred.
- Exceptional communication, influencing, and executive presentation skills.
