Job Description:

The Oregon Military Department is a state agency that supports the Oregon National Guard. You are NOT required to be a member of the Oregon National Guard to apply for this position.

The Oregon Military Department is recruiting for a Safety Specialist 2. This is a permanent full-time state position located in Salem, Oregon.

This position is classified management service and is not represented by a union.

What You Will be Doing
This position exists to develop and administer occupational safety and injury-loss prevention programs for the Oregon Military Department state employee locations.

Working Conditions
Work is conducted in an open office environment, which results in frequent interruptions and distractions.  Employee may encounter angry, upset employees and/or public on a routine basis.   Work requires interaction with military personnel, some of which are armed.  Must be willing to travel throughout the state by car or military aircraft.  May accompany others on inspections in inclement weather or adverse environmental conditions.  May be required to wear a hard-hat, eye protection, hearing protection or other personal protective equipment.

What You Need to Qualify
A Bachelor's Degree in Safety, Industrial Hygiene, or related field.

-AND-

Two (2) years of experience in Workers' Compensation insurance loss prevention or as an occupational health and safety representative in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional, or agricultural setting

***OR***
Five (5) years of experience in Occupational Health and Safety consultation work in an industrial, manufacturing, government, utilities, institutional, or agricultural setting or in Workers' Compensation insurance loss prevention.

Preference may be given to any candidate(s) that have Industrial Hygiene experience.

Additional Requirements

Must obtain and maintain a favorable background check.

This position requires a fingerprint based CJIS criminal background check.

Must possess and maintain a valid drivers license or have reliable alternative mode of transportation. This position travels to sites throughout the state of Oregon. Overnight travel may be required.

Desired Attributes (These are skills/experience that we have identified as essential to success in this position).

  • Proficiency with Excel, BI Power, or Power Point and tracking data bases

  • Excellent Interpersonal Skills (the ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing)

  • Experience Processing Workers Compensation Claims

  • Attention to details and accuracy

  • Familiarity with OSHA rules and policies

  • Experience writing, interpreting and implementing policy
