Job Description

 

JOB SUMMARY

 

Performs various organizational, manual, and technical tasks associated with Fleet Services shop management and operations.  

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

 

Must be at least 18 years of age.

High school diploma or GED equivalent required.

A valid driver’s license accepted by the State of Utah is required at the time of hire. A valid driver’s license issued by the State of Utah must be obtained within six (6) months of hire to operate a County vehicle.

Experience working with and around motor vehicles.

Ability to lift up to 50 pounds, bend, crouch, and stand for extended periods on concrete shop floors.

 

Must receive a verified negative test result on a mandatory drug test before starting in this position. Will be subject to random alcohol and drug testing. May be subject to post-accident and reasonable suspicion alcohol and drug testing.

Due to the nature of this position, the successful applicant must pass a required background check through a BCI name check in accordance with current County Human Resources policy requirements.

 

 

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Shop Cleanliness: Maintains a clean and safe shop environment by sweeping floors, clearing debris, emptying trash, keeping walkways clear, and identifying potential hazards.
• Technician Support: Locates, stages, and delivers requested light-duty vehicles directly to designated technician work bays.
• Assists with Vehicle Check-in and Decommissioning: Confirms VIN numbers match paperwork, installs and removes license plates, preps and cleans out vehicles, installs and removes decals, scans and files documents, fuels vehicles.
• Transport and Delivery: Drives and shuttles light-duty County vehicles between maintenance facilities, user departments, and external repair shops.
• Lot Organization: Arranges and parks standard fleet vehicles systematically to ensure optimal lot traffic flow and quick access.
• Backup Service Writer Duties: Provides occasional coverage at the service desk; greets customers, answers phone calls, opens standard repair orders, and documents reported vehicle symptoms.
• Minor Mechanical Tasks: General shop and grounds cleanup; replacing cleaning supplies at the fuel pumps; vacuum and wash vehicles.
• Other duties as assigned.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES (KSA)

 

Knowledge of:

 

• Digital Literacy: Familiarity with computer data entry to look up asset numbers, open service tickets, enter accurate data, and process paper flow
• Shop Safety: Ability to follow basic garage safety protocols and standard workspace cleanup

 

Skills and Abilities to:

 

• Maneuver and park standard-sized trucks, vans, and passenger cars in shop bays and parking lots
• Provide great customer service with professional communication skills to interact with County personnel during the vehicle intake process

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTSThis position requires extensive physical labor approximately 90% of the time, including lifting, pushing, pulling, and carrying objects weighing more than 50 pounds, occasionally up to 100 pounds with some assistance; kneeling, bending, and crawling; and standing, climbing ladders, and reaching up, over, and down.

Job duties may involve exposure to grease, dirt, dust, fumes, chemicals, smoke, and/or loud noises, as well as periodic exposure to extreme weather conditions.

 

This position requires working in multiple settings, including maintenance shops, outdoor lots in all weather conditions, and, occasionally, an indoor service office desk setting.
