USD $23.00 - USD $24.75 /Hr.

Overview

The IT Infrastructure Technician is responsible for the installation and maintenance of physical data and telephony infrastructure — including cable plant, network electronics, and VoIP devices — and for the day-to-day support of the switching, wireless, and structured cabling that carry the University's network. The role provides hands-on layer-1 and entry-level layer-2 support under the direction of senior network staff, and maintains accurate records and inventory of all associated equipment.

 

Guidelines• Installs and maintains physical data and telephony network infrastructure• Performs day-to-day moves, adds, and changes at the physical and switch-port level• Assists senior network staff with basic switch, wireless, and VoIP configuration and troubleshooting• Maintains inventory, port assignments, and usage records of all equipment• Serves as liaison to local CATV and POTS telephone providers and to network hardware vendors• Position requires occasional night and weekend hours in support of the University

 

Responsibilities

• Installs, terminates, and tests Cat3 and higher cable and components, and multi- and single-mode fiber cable and components• Performs switch-port moves, adds, and changes, including basic port configuration and VLAN assignment under established standards• Assists with the installation, patching, and physical deployment of switches, routers, and wireless access points• Performs first-level network connectivity troubleshooting (cabling, port, PoE, and link faults) and escalates to senior network staff as needed• Uses network monitoring and management tools to identify, document, and report infrastructure and connectivity issues• Maintains existing telephony infrastructure• Installs, maintains, and troubleshoots VoIP telephones• Maintains accurate record keeping for existing equipment, cable plant, and port/IP assignments, including updates to network and cabling documentation• Liaises with outside vendors to coordinate new product installations and repairs• Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

Education:

Minimal Qualifications: • Completion of secondary education (high school) or equivalentPreferred Qualifications:• Completion of vocational education as electrician or telecommunications technician• Industry certification such as CompTIA Network+

 

Experience:Minimal Experience: • Installation and termination of Cat3 and Cat5e or higher infrastructure cabling• Familiarity with basic data networking concepts

Preferred Experience:• Installation and termination of multi- and single-mode fiber optic cabling• Exposure to enterprise switching and wireless hardware (e.g., Cisco, Aruba, or comparable platforms), including basic port and VLAN configuration• Familiarity with network monitoring/management tools• Familiarity with emergency telephone, auto-dialer, and other pre-programmed telephone devices

Essential Skills

• Moderate use of hand tools• Moderate use of light power tools• Basic knowledge of physical networking infrastructure components and the installation thereof• Basic understanding of data networking concepts, including TCP/IP, Ethernet switching, and VLANs• Ability to read and follow network diagrams, cabling schedules, and port assignments• Problem analysis and troubleshooting• Strong written and verbal communication skills• Detail-oriented records keeping
