Alvin I. Goodman Chair, Nephrology

Overview

The Alvin I. Goodman Chair in Nephrology ("Goodman Chair") is an endowed position in the Department of Medicine at New York Medical College (NYMC) School of Medicine (SOM) for a physician scientist with specialization in nephrology, kidney transplantation, kidney biology, renal injury and repair, translational immunology, and/or closely related disciplines. Candidates for the position shall hold and/or be eligible for an NYMC SOM faculty appointment at the rank of professor, and shall be eligible for clinical appointment to the medical staff at Westchester Medical Center (WMC), the primary academic clinical affiliate of NYMC. The Goodman Chair is expected to build a nationally recognized, externally funded translational research program that advances kidney science, discovery, and academic nephrology as relates to their area(s) of specialization. The endowment opportunity provides funds, with appropriate approvals, to support the compensation of the holder of the Goodman Chair, as well as research and teaching activities conducted under the holder’s.

Responsibilities

• Develops, leads, and sustains a nationally recognized translational research program in nephrology, or closely related disciplines/ areas of study, such as transplantation biology, renal injury and repair, epithelial and/or endothelial biology, translational immunology, etc.
• Secures, maintains, and expands extramural research support from federal agencies, foundations, industry partners, philanthropy, and other mission-aligned sources to support investigator-initiated science, collaborative programs, research infrastructure, trainee development, and endowed chair activities.
• Leads development of competitive grant applications, program-project proposals, center-level initiatives, industry-sponsored and investigator-initiated studies, philanthropic proposals, and endowment opportunities that advance NYMC and WMC priorities in kidney disease, transplantation, and translational biology.
• Demonstrates sustained scholarly and research productivity through peer-reviewed publications, national and international presentations, collaborative grants, trainee mentorship, and scientific leadership.
• Is expected to achieve a defined level of research productivity and financial sustainability within the first five years of appointment, including a substantial portfolio of investigator-initiated extramural funding sufficient to support the Chair holder’s research program, key research personnel, and ongoing scholarly activity.
• Builds collaborative research programs across the academic health center including the WMCHealth network, basic science and clinical departments, and external partners with priority to advance kidney disease, transplantation, dialysis, and vascular/endothelial biology research.
• Provides academic leadership for research and teaching activities supported by endowment funds, ensuring that resources are used for NYMC-approved research, educational, and scholarly activities conducted under the Chair holder’s direction.
• Mentors faculty, fellows, residents, medical students, graduate students, postdoctoral trainees, and research staff, with emphasis on career development, grant preparation, responsible conduct of research, and team-based translational science.
• Participates in NYMC and WMC clinical faculty activities appropriate to expertise, including consultation, program development, academic conferences, and collaboration with nephrology, transplantation, critical care, and related clinical programs.
• Engages in teaching within the SOM, Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, fellowship programs, and other NYMC educational programs as requested by the Department Chair and consistent with the Chair holder’s expertise.
• Adheres to all applicable federal, state, institutional, and sponsor requirements governing human subjects research, animal research, biosafety, data integrity, research compliance, reporting, and data sharing.
• Represents NYMC and WMC in regional, national, and international forums related to academic nephrology and/or closely related disciplines.
• Maintains continued eligibility for the Goodman Chair through sustained academic productivity, responsible stewardship of endowed resources, compliance with applicable policies and gift terms, active alignment with the endowed chair purpose, and satisfactory periodic review by the Department Chair and Dean of the SOM.

Endowed Chair Stewardship Expectations:

• Develops, within the first year of appointment, a written five-year research, funding, recruitment, and program-development plan aligned with NYMC priorities, WMC clinical and translational missions, and the donor intent of the endowment.
• Uses endowed resources responsibly and transparently for allowable NYMC-approved purposes, including salary support where permitted, research personnel, trainees, pilot studies, core services, equipment, grant development, scholarly travel, academic programming, and research or teaching activities conducted under the Chair holder’s direction.
• Partners with NYMC, WMC, WMCHealth, and institutional advancement or philanthropy leadership to cultivate federal, foundation, industry, philanthropic, and continued endowment support for academic nephrology, kidney science and related work.
• Participates in donor stewardship, philanthropic engagement, public-facing academic presentations, investiture or recognition activities, and annual reporting that demonstrates the academic, scientific, educational, and clinical impact of the endowed chair.
• Provides an annual endowed chair impact report summarizing grants submitted and awarded, publications, invited presentations, trainees and junior faculty mentored, research staff supported, collaborations developed, philanthropy-related activities, use of endowed funds, and progress toward five-year goals.
• Builds a sustainable, cross-cutting translational research enterprise that extends beyond a single disease or organ system while maintaining strong relevance to kidney disease and transplantation. The program may include investigator-initiated clinical or translational studies, collaborative laboratory programs, research cores, biorepositories, data resources, pilot funding mechanisms, and interdisciplinary partnerships spanning immunology, inflammation, tissue injury and repair, epithelial and endothelial biology, vascular biology, critical care, surgery, pathology, nephrology, transplantation, and basic science programs.
• Develops a pipeline of physician-scientists, translational investigators, and multidisciplinary research teams whose work bridges nephrology, transplantation, immunology, vascular biology, tissue injury and repair, and other cross-cutting domains by mentoring students, trainees, staff and faculty toward independent funding and scholarly productivity.

Qualifications

• D., M.D./Ph.D. or equivalent degree.
• Board certification or eligibility in nephrology or a closely related discipline is expected.
• Eligible for faculty appointment at professor rank in the Department of Medicine.
• Eligible for New York State medical licensure and credentialing at Westchester Medical Center.
• Eligible for appointment to the medical staff of WMC.
• Computer literacy in PC and Mac-based software applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and MS Office Suite; other software specific to research specialization, as needed.
• Established record as a senior academic physician-scientist or translational investigator in nephrology, transplantation, immunology, kidney injury/repair, epithelial or endothelial biology, or related fields.
• Demonstrated history of extramural funding, high-impact scholarship, program building, interdisciplinary collaboration, and mentorship of trainees and faculty required.
• Internationally or nationally recognized expertise in nephrology, transplantation biology, renal injury/repair, translational immunology, epithelial biology, endothelial biology, or related scientific domains.
• Demonstrated success securing extramural research support and leading productive, collaborative, and compliant research programs.
• Documented capacity to generate and sustain investigator-initiated funding from federal, foundation, industry, philanthropic, and endowment-related sources.
• Ability to prepare and execute a strategic plans addressing research, funding, recruitment, and sustainability plan with measurable milestones for grants, publications, mentorship, program development, and responsible use of endowed chair resources.
• Experience with donor stewardship, advancement partnerships, annual impact reporting, research compliance, grant administration, and transparent stewardship of restricted or endowed funds preferred.
• Excellent interpersonal, verbal, and written communication skills with ability to engage faculty, trainees, hospital leadership, research administration, philanthropy, donors, industry partners, and external scientific collaborators.
• Strong leadership, mentoring, planning, and organizational skills in an academic health center environment.
• Ability to develop research infrastructure, recruit and retain research staff, manage start-up resources in alignment with institutional mission and endowed purpose.
• Commitment to education, mentorship, academic citizenship, research integrity, professionalism, inclusive and engaging work ethic and ethical conduct.
• Ability to work cooperatively within the academic health center as well as external partners.
• Academic health center; clinical patient-centered facilities, research labs, office, and teaching environments.
• Activities may include meetings, teaching sessions, clinical collaboration, laboratory/ research oversight, and occasional travel for scientific meetings.
• Standard academic health center, research, and clinical environments; must comply with institutional safety, biosafety, clinical, and research compliance requirements.
