Description

The Department of Biology is seeking a full-time, tenure-track faculty member to teach lecture and lab sections of Anatomy and Physiology I & II along with related biology courses.

Anatomy and Physiology I and II provide students with foundational knowledge of human structure and function, preparing them for careers in healthcare, biomedical sciences, and related fields. Coursework includes case studies, problem-based learning, critical thinking, scientific inquiry, and hands-on laboratory experience. The program supports students applying for competitive programs including nursing, radiation technology, and other allied health programs, as well as students pursuing transfer to four-year colleges.

As part of the college's efforts to ensure equitable outcomes for all students, candidates must demonstrate a commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching practices. The ideal candidate will have a record of excellence in college-level instruction, experience with innovative and student-centered teaching strategies, and a commitment to fostering an inclusive learning environment. In addition to teaching responsibilities, candidates should demonstrate a commitment to student advising, curriculum development, and departmental service. The faculty member will be expected to collaborate with colleagues, contribute to program assessment and development, and engage with the broader campus and community.

While limited hybrid and online teaching opportunities may be available, this position will require substantial in-person, on-campus instruction, including laboratory-based coursework and student mentoring.
  • Teach a full-time courseload consisting primarily of anatomy and physiology lab and lecture courses with opportunities to teach additional courses based on department needs, faculty interest, and new program development.
  • Collaborate with Biology Department faculty to:
    • Develop innovative, culturally relevant methods for teaching laboratory sciences that foster inclusivity and equity in the classroom.
    • Implement and evaluate research-based pedagogical strategies that support diverse learning styles and backgrounds.
    • Support student learning outside the classroom through activities like mentoring, staffing open laboratories, and holding accessible office hours.
    • Regularly update syllabi and assist in creating department-approved curricula and laboratory handouts.
    • Develop and assess student learning outcomes, ensuring they promote equitable learning experiences and support students from all backgrounds.
    • Pursue grant opportunities that further excellence, equity, and diversity in science education.
  • Actively participate in department, division, and professional staff meetings, along with other components of college governance and service.
  • Engage in college programs and community service activities that promote HCC’s mission: Educate, Inspire, and Connect.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Master’s degree in Biology or a closely related field;
  • Minimum of 2 years teaching Anatomy and Physiology including lab and lecture;
  • Demonstrated excellence in teaching using varied pedagogical strategies;
  • Experience using technology in both classroom and laboratory settings to enhance learning;
  • Effective communication skills and ability to work collaboratively on projects and initiatives;
  • A commitment to carrying out the mission of Holyoke Community College, with a strong ability to work collaboratively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds, including those of varying abilities, ages, ethnicities, races, sexual orientations, and gender identities;
  • Dedication to promoting equity, diversity, and inclusion in the academic environment.

Equivalency Statement:
We welcome and encourage applicants who do not meet the qualifications as stated above, to put in writing precisely how their background and experience have prepared them for the responsibilities of this position. It is preferred that this document be uploaded separately from the resume, cover letter, and references.

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Community college teaching in a diverse or Hispanic-Serving Institution setting;
  • Ability to develop strong relationships between the college and employers of life science graduates;
  • Doctorate in biology or a closely related field.
