About Camp Oty’Okwa
Camp Oty’Okwa has been owned and operated by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio since 1942. This includes overnight and day-long programs that directly support BBBSCO youth, including an overnight summer camp, as well as school-based field trips and external rentals of the property. Due to the unique qualities of the camp, the curriculum has a strong focus on environmental education. While the physical footprint of camp sits on approximately 50 acres, Camp Oty’Okwa encompasses more than 777 acres in the beautiful Hocking Hills of South Bloomingville, Ohio
Position Summary:
The Vice President of Camp Mentoring is responsible for leading the strategy and operations for Camp Oty'Okwa in connection to the overall mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio. Camp Oty’Okwa is an integral part of the mentorship program offerings available to BBBSCO youth and plays a substantial role in the organization’s finances and business operations. You will provide key leadership to continue the high-quality programs for youth and act as a strategic partner with the Chief Operating Officer to build and maintain a sustainable business plan for Camp?Oty’Okwa. The position supports 7 direct reports that (3 program, 3 property management, 1operations and scheduling). The team also encompasses a variety of year-round part time and seasonal team members that fall under the Camp Mentoring umbrella.
Following the successful completion of the 90-day probationary period, this position will have the opportunity follow a hybrid work schedule of three days onsite and two days working from home. Outside of peak operating periods, you are expected to work from the Columbus office at least one day per week. The remaining two onsite days will be spent at Camp Oty’Okwa. Due to the nature of camp operations, the hybrid schedule may be impacted during peak seasons, particularly during the summer camp season, when the position requires increased onsite and hands-on presence at Camp Oty’Okwa. This role can expect additional onsite or on-call time at camp during these periods to support program operations, staff, and overall camp needs.
Position Abilities/Competencies:
Operations and Compliance
- Maintains safe operations, oversees risk management for the property and activities
- Works to build a strong logistics plan to make sure that daily activities run smoothly
- Partners with the Property Operations Director to proactively identify and address ongoing maintenance needs related to safe camp operations and prioritizes capital improvements for continued Camp growth
- Maintains current accreditation status through the American Camp Association
- Maintains active First Aid, CPR and other relevant certifications, as appropriate
- Ensures that all permanent and seasonal employees receive proper, adequate, ongoing, and up-to-date training to maintain their areas of supervision
People Management
- Manages accountabilities for entire team under the Group Mentoring umbrella
- Sets and manages goals for staff members, completing quarterly checks to ensure projects and goals are on track
- Creates a culture of collaboration among the camp team as well as across departments
- Incorporates the BBBSCO core values of excellence, growth mindset, integrity, ownership, relationships, respect, and trust into all aspects of the teams work
- Supports the group mentoring team and broader BBBSCO team with a servant leadership mindset by encouraging and modeling teamwork, a positive attitude, and?a strong sense?of self-awareness.
Strategy and Leadership
- Collaborates with COO to develop vision and strategies that position the camp for growth
- Ensures that camp activities align with BBBSCO vision, mission, and values
- Designs and manages camp budget, including forecasting and continued work to adjust expense as necessary to achieve targets; builds contingency planning into budget and works to develop a strong fiscal plan that allows for sustainable property management
- Maintains a strong educational curriculum and ensures a high quality of activities and opportunities at camp for both BBBSCO and external audiences
- Leads and stewards ongoing relationships with local community and education partners and establishes pathways for new partnerships
- Assists the Chief Mission Engagement Officer and other members of the Engagement Team in fundraising efforts as needed
- Participates in regular BBBSCO Leadership Team?meetings
- Participates and attends Agency and Foundation Board Meetings as needed
Requirements
- Must possess a minimum of a Bachelor’s Degree in social services, environmental education, or related field preferred; Minimum of 7-10 years of related work experience with 5 years being in a camp environment; Minimum 5 years of supervisory experience
- Must have experience working with children and youth from other cultures, and be willing to work with diverse populations in diverse areas
- Proven track record of exceeding goals and a bottom-line orientation
- General understanding of finance, systems, and HR; broad experience with the full range of business functions and systems, including strategic development and planning, budgeting, business analysis, finance, information systems, human resources, and marketing
- Must demonstrate strong planning and execution skills including discipline, organization, initiative, and agility. Must demonstrate the ability to think strategically
- Must have working knowledge of Microsoft Office
- Must have viable transportation, valid driver license to meet job responsibilities
- Active certification in First Aid and CPR/AED (in-house training provided if needed)
