Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Student Life, the Student Engagement Manager manages the student life program for students living in the residence halls and after school programs at Model Secondary School for The Deaf (MSSD), promoting an atmosphere conducive to the academic, social, emotional, and life planning development of students.


 

Job Description:

  • Develops, implements, and oversees a comprehensive after-school and student engagement program that promotes student involvement through clubs, organizations, leadership opportunities, recreational activities, cultural celebrations, service-learning projects, dances, educational programs, and other special events.

  • Coordinates elections for all student organizations and provides ongoing guidance and support to student leaders.

  • Designs, coordinates, and delivers ongoing professional development and training opportunities for the Student Life team to strengthen knowledge, skills, and program effectiveness.

  • Supervises and mentors student leaders and student organization sponsors, providing training and development opportunities; oversees the recruitment and retention of student organizations and volunteers; and ensures the safety and well-being of students during all activities and events.

  • Provides supervision to the team; provides ongoing feedback to all employees including student workers; completes the annual performance evaluations for each regular status and extended temporary staff; set goals and expectations for each staff; resolves workplace conflicts in a timely manner and seeks support from Human Resources or the Office of Equal Opportunity Program, if needed; promotes a safe and healthy work environment; and ensures professional development opportunities are provided to each regular status and extended temporary staff.

  • Promotes student engagement and leadership development by encouraging participation in extracurricular activities; regularly assesses student interests and program effectiveness through surveys, feedback sessions, and other evaluation methods; and collaborates with students to develop new organizations, activities, and initiatives that reflect their interests and passions.

  • Develops, manages, and monitors assigned budgets for student activities and after-school programming, ensuring cost-effective use of resources, timely processing of expenditures, accurate timesheet and recordkeeping, maintenance of accurate records of student participation, event attendance, organizational activities, and compliance with school policies and procedures in all student activities.

  • Works collaboratively with school and residential staff to support the integration of extracurricular programs with the overall educational mission of the school and residential program; oversees dormitory activities with school staff to provide support of the academic program; communicates effectively with parents and guardians about student activities and upcoming events; and serves as a liaison between the student body and the administration.

  • Works with staff and students to develop a sense of community; implements community building activities for staff and students; and ensures that the academic and residential programs promote community building programming throughout the day.

  • Serves as a leader and first responder for emergencies during work shift and during off hours non-work shift hours according to assigned rotating schedule; responds to student and staff situations when escalated to provide guidance to staff, and uses a high level of professional judgment in determining appropriate response plans, including reporting to the scene of the incident to lead crisis response as needed; and serves as Manager on Call (MOC) on a rotation basis.

  • Establishes rules, guidelines and procedures for the after school program and all student activities; and provides on-going communication about rules, guidelines and procedures to the student life and school staff, students and parents at MSSD.

  • Works with the MSSD team to provide after school programs that facilitate competence in serving different types of student populations.

  • Coordinates all student incidents and ensures all procedures are followed including informing appropriate personnel, preparing an incident chronology, providing a written summary to MLT/SLLT, and coordination of all post-incident communication and incident closure.

  • Serves as an active, contributing member of the Clerc Center community and Gallaudet University as a whole.

  • Establishes and maintains a positive and supportive working relationship with co-workers and supervisors.

  • Demonstrates a genuine commitment to belonging in the workplace and participates in activities and workshops to foster continuous learning.

  • Serves as a mandatory reporter under Title IX; and commits to completing Title IX training and other compliance requirements on an annual basis.

  • Prioritizes safety in the workplace as a collective responsibility for the well-being of employees and fosters a culture of safety that is integral to our success, including strict adherence to safety procedures and protocols, as well as promptly reporting any safety hazards or incidents.

  • Performs related and other duties as needed.

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree.

  • A minimum of four years of professional experience with residential education, student services, or a related field.

  • Ability to communicate in American Sign Language.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s degree.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Experience working in a K-12 setting.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong knowledge of integration of academic and non-academic programs and activities.

  • Strong familiarity with current trends and practices in student development and school settings. 

  • Strong ability to work effectively with teachers, staff, students and parents. 

  • Demonstrated ability to work with and across University departments, outside constituents and groups.

Additional Job Details:

  • The incumbent must be able to work on weekends and in the evenings as needed.
