Summary 

The Nuclear Safety Specialist is responsible for promoting and maintaining a strong nuclear safety culture across project sites, outage activities, maintenance programs, and construction operations. This position ensures compliance with client requirements, nuclear industry regulations, site-specific procedures, and company safety expectations. The Nuclear Safety Specialist serves as a resource to field leadership and craft personnel by identifying risks, driving corrective actions, conducting audits, and fostering continuous improvement in safety performance. 

This role requires a proactive approach to hazard identification, regulatory compliance, human performance improvement, and maintaining the highest standards of personnel and industrial safety within nuclear environments. 

Essential Duties & Responsibilities 

• Promote and reinforce a strong nuclear safety culture aligned with client and industry expectations. 

• Conduct field observations, safety audits, inspections, and assessments to verify compliance with site requirements. 

• Monitor work activities to ensure adherence to safety procedures, radiological controls, work permits, and regulatory requirements. 

• Investigate incidents, near misses, and safety concerns and assist with corrective action development. 

• Support pre-job briefs, hazard analyses, and work planning activities. 

• Identify safety trends and provide recommendations for improvement. 

• Assist project management and site leadership in implementing safety initiatives. 

• Participate in root cause evaluations and corrective action programs. 

• Provide safety coaching and mentoring to supervisors, foremen, and craft personnel. 

• Ensure compliance with OSHA regulations, client requirements, and nuclear industry standards. 

• Support Fitness-for-Duty, Human Performance, and Nuclear Safety Culture initiatives. 

• Maintain detailed and accurate safety records, reports, and documentation. 

• Coordinate and deliver safety training, orientation programs, and toolbox meetings. 

• Interface with client safety organizations and regulatory representatives as required. 

• Promote stop-work authority and ensure personnel understand their right and responsibility to address unsafe conditions. 

• Perform other duties as assigned. 

Qualifications 

• High School Diploma or GED required. 

• Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Occupational Safety, Industrial Safety, Engineering, or related field preferred. 

• Minimum 5 years of industrial safety experience. 

• Minimum 3 years supporting nuclear power generation projects, outages, maintenance, or construction activities preferred. 

• Working knowledge of OSHA regulations and industrial safety best practices. 

• Experience conducting incident investigations and developing corrective actions. 

• Strong communication and leadership skills. 

• Ability to influence personnel at all organizational levels. 

• Experience working in high-risk industrial environments. 

• Proficient with Microsoft Office applications and digital reporting systems. 

Preferred Qualifications 

• OSHA 30-Hour Certification. 

• CHST (Construction Health and Safety Technician) Certification. 

• CSP (Certified Safety Professional) Certification. 

• Experience supporting NRC-regulated facilities. 

• Human Performance Fundamentals training. 

• Root Cause Analysis experience. 

• Knowledge of radiological controls and nuclear work management processes.

Physical Requirements 

Employees must be able to safely perform the essential functions of the position with or without reasonable accommodation, including: 

• Perform sustained physical activity, including standing, walking, climbing, and working extended shifts. 

• Lift, carry, push, and pull tools, materials, and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs. 

• Bend, stoop, squat, kneel, crouch, crawl, reach, and work in varied body positions. 

• Work at heights and in confined or restricted spaces. 

• Work in outdoor and indoor environments under varying weather and site conditions. 

• Work on uneven, slippery, or rough terrain in active industrial or construction settings. 

• Wear required personal protective equipment, including fall protection and respiratory protection when required. 

• Maintain situational awareness and communicate effectively to work safely around moving equipment and hazards. 

Additional Requirements 

• Must be eligible to obtain and maintain unescorted access at nuclear generating facilities. 

• Must successfully complete all client-required screenings, including background checks, Fitness-for-Duty evaluations, ePHQ requirements, and site-specific training. 

• Ability to travel and support projects throughout the United States. 

• Valid driver's license required.
