The Campus Police Department provides law enforcement, emergency response, crime prevention, safety education, and security services throughout the Ferrum College campus. Our officers work collaboratively with the campus community to promote safety, preserve peace, and support the College's mission.

What We're Looking For
Ferrum College is seeking a professional, dependable, and community-focused Police Officer to join the Campus Police Department. This is a non-supervisory position responsible for performing general law enforcement duties necessary to maintain the safety, security, and good order of the College community.
The Police Officer works an assigned shift under the general guidance of the Chief of Police and designated supervisors. The successful candidate will demonstrate sound judgment, professionalism, strong communication skills, and the ability to work effectively with students, employees, parents, College officials, fellow officers, and members of the public.
Key Responsibilities

  • Identify criminal offenders and criminal activity and, when appropriate, apprehend offenders and participate in subsequent court proceedings.
  • Conduct preventive patrols and other crime prevention activities to reduce opportunities for criminal activity.
  • Respond to individuals who may be at risk of physical harm and provide appropriate emergency assistance.
  • Promote and preserve peace throughout the campus community.
  • Facilitate the safe movement of vehicular and pedestrian traffic.
  • Identify potentially serious law enforcement or governmental concerns and report them through appropriate channels.
  • Enforce institutional rules and regulations related to student conduct as established by the Student Handbook.
  • Enforce parking regulations, including violations involving blocking or impeding traffic.
  • Issue traffic tickets, summonses, warrants, and arrest warrants as authorized.
  • Enforce institutional vehicle identification and parking permit requirements.
  • Enforce applicable criminal and traffic laws of the Commonwealth of Virginia within the officer's jurisdiction of authority.
  • Conduct investigations and prepare clear, concise, and accurate reports.
  • Conduct foot patrols in and around academic buildings to identify and address safety and security concerns.
  • Conduct foot patrols in occupied and unoccupied residence halls to identify and address safety and security concerns.
  • Maintain knowledge of campus security systems, including security cameras and alarm systems, and follow established operating procedures.
  • Maintain a professional law enforcement presence and respond consistently and appropriately to incidents.
  • File required patrol reports at the conclusion of each shift.
  • Engage the campus community in crime prevention, safety awareness, and other community policing initiatives.
  • Pursue additional police training and professional development as required.
  • Work collaboratively with the Student Affairs Office and other College departments to support campus safety and institutional objectives.
  • Assume special responsibilities and assignments as directed by the Chief of Police or designee, Vice President of Operations, or President.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

You exercise sound judgment, remain calm under pressure, and communicate effectively with individuals from diverse backgrounds. You are physically capable of performing the essential duties of the position and committed to maintaining your professional knowledge and skills through ongoing training.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Current Virginia certification as a Police Officer.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Responsible work experience.
  • Knowledge of community policing techniques.
  • General knowledge of rules of evidence and laws governing search and seizure.
  • Ability to work effectively with young adults.
  • Ability to analyze evidence and conduct appropriate questioning and interviews.
  • Ability to prepare clear and concise oral and written reports.
  • Skilled in the use of firearms and police equipment.
  • Physical ability and endurance necessary to perform law enforcement duties.
  • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, College officials, coworkers, and the public.
  • Successful completion of required criminal history and credit checks.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Certified Community Police Specialist.
  • DCJS Certified Basic Instructor.
