Responsible for departmental operations planning/execution or focused on execution of professional activities within a technical discipline. Functions with some autonomy but guided by established policies or review of end results. The job allows modification of procedures and practices covering work as long as the end results meet standards of acceptability (quality, volume, timeliness, etc.)
Job Description
Position Overview & Technical Scope
The CNC Maintenance Leader is a hands-on technical and leadership role responsible for ensuring the maximum uptime, reliability, and precision of our advanced CNC machining center fleet. This position leads a team of maintenance technicians, spearheading preventative/predictive maintenance, troubleshooting complex electrical/mechanical/hydraulic issues, and
overseeing repairs on high-end machine tools—specifically GF Machining Solutions, Mazak, and Okuma platforms.
The ideal candidate possesses deep expertise in multi-axis CNC controls (such as Heidenhain, Mazatrol, and Okuma OSP), high-speed spindle maintenance, a strong mechanical aptitude, and a proven ability to lead and develop maintenance teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Key Roles and Responsibilities
1. Equipment Reliability & Technical Execution
• Specialized CNC Expertise: Ensure that equipment and tools are in good condition for use. Serve as the internal subject matter expert for the troubleshooting, repair, and optimization of GF Machining Solutions, Mazak, and Okuma CNC machines, including 5-axis high-speed millers, EDM systems, turning centers, and multi-tasking machining centers.
• PM & Corrective Planning: Propose and execute robust plans for preventive
maintenance (PM) and corrective action, specifically tailored to high-precision CNC equipment (spindle vibration analysis, high-pressure coolant systems, linear scale cleaning, and way lube monitoring).
• Complex Troubleshooting & Control Systems: Diagnose and resolve intricate
mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic faults. Troubleshoot advanced CNC control panels (including Heidenhain, Mazatrol, and OSP), high-performance servo drives, motors, and feedback systems (glass scales, encoders, and resolvers).
• Process Problem-Solving: Use technical experience, analytical thinking, and multiple internal/external sources to propose solutions outside of set parameters to address complicated manufacturing processes with technical variety and/or interdependent production cycles.
2. People Management & Leadership
• Direct Supervision: Includes direct people management responsibility, including staffing, performance development, conveying performance expectations, and handling sensitive issues.
• Team Development: Act as a resource for colleagues with less experience. Identify skill gaps within the team and provide targeted training on CNC diagnostics, safety lock-out/tag-out (LOTO), and advanced troubleshooting techniques for Heidenhain, GF Machining Solutions, Mazak, and Okuma platforms.
• Project & Resource Management: May lead small projects with low risks and
resource requirements. Explains information and develops skills to bring team
members to consensus around topics within the field.
3. Strategy, Best Practices & Continuous Improvement
• Market & Operational Awareness: Utilize in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline to execute policy/strategy. Possess knowledge of best practices and how your area integrates with others, while remaining aware of competition and market-differentiating factors.
• Vendor & CMMS Management: Coordinate service calls, parts orders, and technical support with OEM representatives and third-party contractors. Utilize CMMS software to track work orders, log machine history, and manage critical spare parts inventory.
• Safety & 5S Compliance: Maintain a clean, organized, and safe working environment adhering to OSHA standards and company safety policies (strict enforcement of LOTO, electrical safety, and PPE).
Qualifications & Requirements/ Required Qualifications
• Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma / GED with at least 6 years of experience in Manufacturing & Equipment Maintenance / CNC Machine Repair).
• Education & Experience (Non-USA): Advanced experience in Manufacturing &
Equipment Maintenance, with a knowledge level comparable to a Bachelor's degree from an accredited university or college (or a high school diploma with relevant experience).
• Specific Platform Experience: Demonstrated, hands-on experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing Mazak and Okuma machines, as well as high-speed 5- axis profile millers and machining centers from GF Machining Solutions.
• Controls & Diagnostics: Proficient in navigating and troubleshooting advanced CNC control systems, with a strong emphasis on Heidenhain (e.g., TNC series), Mazatrol, and Okuma OSP controls. Expert ability to read electrical/mechanical schematics and utilize diagnostic tools (multimeters, vibration analysis, oscilloscopes).
Desired Characteristics
• Strong oral and written communication skills.
• Demonstrated ability to analyze and resolve complex technical problems.
• Ability to document, plan, market, and execute continuous improvement or
maintenance programs.
• Established project management and problem-solving skills. Physical Demands & Working Conditions
• Frequently required to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Ability to lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. with or without mechanical assistance.
• Exposure to manufacturing shop floor conditions, including noise
