Description
The primary purpose of this position is to facilitate the functions of clinical and lab services. The Medical Assistant will take vital signs, prepare patients for the visit with the provider and assist the provider with minor procedures. The Medical Assistant will carry out orders directed by the provider and may carry out duties directed by the RN that are in the appropriate scope of practice. The Medical Assistant may perform routine tests ordered by the provider that require minimal interpretation. Duties are performed in accordance with prescribed procedures, and any deviations are usually accompanied by specific instructions. This position is supervised by the Clinic Lead Nurse.
- Work up patients in preparation to see the provider (collecting vitals, chief complaints and any other preliminary information) and document in the EHR.
- Assist the provider with minor office procedures when necessary.
- Clean/stock rooms, wash laundry, and document actions on the cleaning logs.
- Answer the clinic desk phone, take messages and/or answer questions, appropriately, and coordinate care with the patient using guidance from the provider and/or RN.
- Manage referral processes as needed by communicating between clinic, clinical support staff, and the patient.
- Retrieve medical records from other providers to be reviewed by providers and RN.
- Venipuncture and capillary collections, collections by various methods require good judgment as to which method of collection is necessary, vacutainer system, syringe and needle capillary puncture.
- Determine appropriate order of blood collection and understand/practice methodology.
- Process collected blood, spin blood samples, and pour off serum into transfer tubes for transport.
- Perform routine tests including Hemoglobin, Hemoglobin A1C, Glucose, Urinalysis, Pregnancy testing and others as indicated.
- Receive specimens from a variety of sources and verify identification information.
- This position receives and directs communication to the Spanish speaking population served by the Health Department in a friendly and helpful manner.
- Assist the clinical support and clinical staff by translating for the Spanish speaking population. This would include retrieving personal data, health histories, present and past medical problems, scheduling appointments, retrieving results and interpreting them for the clients, and documentation of encounters in EHR.
- Possess knowledge of the programs, policies, operations, services and clinic schedules of the agency and understand their interactions.
- Receive phone calls from Spanish speaking clients and relay information needed to appropriate staff.
- Translate written materials (forms, brochures, letters, etc.) from English to Spanish to assist both the client and staff in obtaining information in an understandable form.
Additional Functions
- Other duties as assigned, including but not limited to assisting with public health emergencies, such as natural disasters, shelter duty, pandemics or communicable disease events.
Completion of accredited Medical Assistant program preferred.
Preferred Credential: Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) with AAMA, Certified Clinical Medical Assistant (CCMA) with NHA, or Registered Medical Assistant (RMA) with AMT
Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.
