Job Description:

Accountabilities:

Accountability #1

• To assist each resident in their search for safe, and affordable housing
• The incumbent, exercising considerable initiative, carries out the duties of the position, with minimal direction and day to day supervision.
• Computer literate, demonstrating experience with Microsoft Office, internet and keyboarding.  Experience with HIFIS an asset.  Recognizable skill in effective time management and organization.
• Demonstrates effective interpersonal and communication skills and has ability to deal with internal/external contacts at all levels within and outside of the organization.
• Skills in understanding the use of authority in supervision and to intervene effectively in crisis situations.

Accountability #2

• Demonstrate empathy, concern and interest in providing quality care for client following the facility Mission statement of offering new hope and real help to those who need it most.
• To adhere to department boundaries and follow direction of supervisor
• Records intake processes and makes client case notes and observations in HIFIS.  Contributes to case histories for all incoming clients/residents.  Provides support and visits to families staying off site.
• Completes SPDAT Assessments for the By-name List.
• Meal preparation and some light housekeeping duties as required
• Life skills, appointments or referrals to client as necessary

Accountability #3

• Represents The Salvation Army in a professional, courteous manner, congruent with the organization’s values and principles.  Liaises with referral sources and other external agencies as needed (e.g. Ontario Works, police, ODSP)
• Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army
• Support and engage with client activities and workshops
• Understanding of cultural differences.  Commitment to teamwork.  Bilingualism an asset.
• Engagement with client in meaningful conversation to be able to assist and refer appropriately to our community partners for the client well being
• Performs other duties as assigned

Managerial/Technical Responsibilities:

• Adhere to standards that are consistent with the values and philosophy of The Salvation Army.
• Participate fully and constructively in staff meetings and in-service training.
• Engage in formal evaluation sessions (PEAC) and supervision 3 and 6 months during the first year of employment and annually thereafter.
• Read and follow the Policy & Procedures Manual and Employee Handbook. 
• Perform other duties as assigned Bilingualism an asset.
• Participate in PATH and By-name list including SPDAT Assessments for clients – track results into HIFIS4

Diplomas, Certifications or Requirements:

• The successful applicant will hold/have:
• Current Certification in First Aid/CPR
• Criminal Police Investigation Check (CPIC)
• Non-Violent crisis intervention training
• Food Handers Certification
• Vulnerable populations records check

Minimum Prior Related Experience:

• 2 years social service worker diploma or equivalent
• 3-5 years in a related field
• Experience working wit a vulnerable population
• HIFIS knowledge an asset

Physical Effort/Dexterity Required:

The performance of the job requires occasional walking and stairs – also some light housekeeping.  Required to lift up to 20lbs

Concentration Required:

The performance of the job requires monitoring the environment and attentive listening – multitasking.

Responsibility for Financial Resources:

• The incumbent is involved in minor financial matters.
• Tracks Food log money
• The incumbent has very little input into the annual budget.

Responsibility for Human Resources:

The incumbent is responsible for his/her own time and effort only.  She may demonstrate work methods to new employees, volunteers and/or students.

Work Environment:

• Dealing with disgruntled clients
• Verbal abuse
• Offensive odors
• Cleaning human waste and dirt (communicable diseases)
• Handing garbage
• Many stairs

Exposure to Hazards:

• Exposure to infections diseases
• Exposure to bodily fluids
• Exposure to angry clients (Non-violent crisis intervention)
• Exposure to drug paraphernalia

Precautionary Measures:

The incumbent must take the following precautionary measures (in addition to health and safety rules):

Immunization for Hepatitis B – or sign waiver

• Universal Precautions
• Use glove
• Wear mask
• Eye protection

Hours of Work:

Up to 24 hours per week - Monday to Friday 8:30am - 4:30pm. Can also be evenings and weekends.

Compensation:

The target hiring range for this position is $22.35 to $22.35 with a maximum of $22.35.

Placement in the salary range will be based on factors such as market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
