Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) provides year-round academic enrichment and summer learning opportunities for more than 400 students in grades 1–9. Position Summary  

Horizons Greater Washington (HGW) seeks a creative and enthusiastic Art Teacher to inspire students in grades 1–8 through hands-on, student-centered visual arts instruction during the Saturday Academy. The Art Teacher creates an engaging classroom where students build creativity, confidence, and self-expression while developing artistic skills. Working closely with the Site Director, the Art Teacher helps foster a joyful learning environment that reflects HGW's commitment to the whole child. 

2026-2027 Program Dates 

16 Saturdays: September 19, 2026 – April 10, 2027 

2026: Sept 19, Sept 26, Oct 10, Oct 17, Oct 24, Nov 7, Nov 21, Dec 5 

2027: Jan 9, Jan 16, Jan 30, Feb 6, Feb 13, Feb 27, Mar 13, April 3 

Schedule 

Saturdays from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. (or until student dismissal). In addition, the position includes three hours of planning time for every Saturday you teach, which may be completed remotely to prepare for the three student groups.

Core Duties and Responsibilities  

Teaching & Student Engagement  

• Plan and deliver engaging, hands-on art lessons for students in grades 1–8.  
• Teach up to three one-hour art classes each Saturday, serving approximately 15–20 students per class.  
• Foster creativity, artistic exploration, and self-expression through a variety of visual arts media and techniques.  
• Differentiate instruction to meet the diverse learning needs and abilities of students.  
• Create a positive classroom culture that encourages collaboration, curiosity, and confidence.  

Classroom & Program Management:   

• Establish and maintain a safe, organized, and inclusive learning environment.  
• Implement positive behavior management practices aligned with HGW's youth development approach.  
• Support the Pyramid of Program Quality by promoting Engagement, Interaction, Supportive Environment, and Safe Environment.  
• Prepare, organize, and maintain art materials, supplies, and classroom spaces.  
• Communicate regularly with the Site Director regarding student progress, classroom needs, and program operations.  
• Participate in staff meetings, trainings and program planning as requested. 
• Maintain reliable attendance and actively contribute to a positive team culture. 

Qualifications  

Required  

• High school diploma or GED equivalent 
• Experience teaching elementary and/or middle school students in a classroom, camp, after-school, or enrichment setting.  
• Demonstrated ability to plan and deliver engaging, project-based lessons.  
• Strong classroom management and relationship-building skills.  
• Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.  
• Ability to collaborate effectively with colleagues and families.  
• Commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and HGW's mission of expanding educational opportunity. 

Preferred  

• Bachelor's degree preferred or equivalent experience 
• Teaching certification in Art 
• Experience supporting multilingual learners and students with diverse learning needs. 
• Demonstrated ability to create inclusive, engaging, and culturally responsive learning environments. 

Pay Rate and Hours:  

$32.19 per hour.

Environmental and Physical Conditions
