About the role
Responsible for supporting the underwriting of level funded medical products by reviewing medical applications and questionnaires, claims experience, and related data to evaluate risk and determine appropriate premium rates for new and existing clients. Applies established risk criteria and underwriting guidelines to produce sound, well-documented underwriting decisions. Collaborates closely with underwriting, sales, and operations partners to ensure alignment on case strategy, data quality, and process execution. Communicates and defends underwriting decisions and risk assessments with the sales field, providing clear rationale and supporting analysis to facilitate understanding and client discussions.Key Accountabilities
Underwriting Analysis & Pricing Execution - Review applications, claims experience, and supporting data to evaluate risk and determine appropriate premium rates for new business and renewals. Apply established underwriting guidelines and pricing methodologies to produce sound, consistent, and profitable decisions.
Case Collaboration & Decision Support - Partner with underwriting, sales, and operations teams to ensure accurate data, alignment on case strategy, and timely execution. Communicate and support underwriting decisions with clear rationale to facilitate internal alignment and effective field engagement.
Documentation & File Quality - Prepare and maintain complete, accurate documentation of underwriting analysis, assumptions, and decisions. Ensure files meet quality, audit, and compliance standards
Tools, Data & Market Awareness - Maintain familiarity with underwriting tools, medical cost drivers, and internal resources to support accurate risk assessment and pricing.
Development & Continuous Improvement - Build underwriting proficiency through ongoing learning, feedback, and application of best practices. Seek opportunities to improve understanding of products, processes, and risk evaluation.
Minimum Requirements
Bachelor’s Degree and/or 2 – 4 years of related experience OR High School Diploma or GED with 4-6 years of related experience.
Working knowledge of medical underwriting principles, or the ability to quickly develop proficiency through training and practical application
Ability to apply established guidelines to make sound, consistent underwriting decisions
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
Effective time management and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment
Clear written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain underwriting decisions and rationale
Proficiency in Microsoft Excel and other underwriting systems/tools
The compensation range for this role is (based on the corporate location in Lake Forest, Illinois):
$62,947.30 - $90,923.65 per yearThe final salary offer will be determined based on factors such as location, qualifications, experience, skill set, and other relevant factors. This position may also be eligible for bonus.
