Description
JOB SUMMARY
This is a professional position. The Adult Services Librarian is responsible for the provision of library services to adults; selects and maintains the physical and digital collections, including online databases, plans and oversees programs and activities, and conducts outreach. This position administrates circulation, and the issuance of library cards, maintains patron records, responds to patron requests and suggestions, and provides reader’s advisory and research assistance to patrons. They supervise library assistants in carrying out circulation and service desk tasks, and daily operations of the library as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
- Maintain library makerspace equipment including basic maintenance, troubleshooting and training.
- Work regularly at the circulation desk to assist patrons with locating materials, reference requests, and reader’s advisory.
- Provide collection development and maintenance for adult physical and digital collections.
- Adding and updating item records in the library’s catalog.
- Schedule employee desk assignments.
- Maintain budget for programming and library materials.
- Maintain statistics for patron services.
- Maintain the daily operation of the library’s reference, genealogy, and local history collection area, including periodicals.
- Manage the interlibrary loan program.
- Plan and administrate adult programming.
- Assist in promoting library programs in print and with social media.
- Assist with development and improvement of policies, procedures, and processes.
- Coordinating with community partners to do outreach and to offer programming.
- Assist and train with technology and electronic devices such as public computers, tablets, self-check stations, and printers.
- Serve as a Supervisor to the library assistants.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
Knowledge of:
- Operational knowledge of makerspace equipment and software (3D printer, laser engraver, sewing machines, etc.) preferred
- Office software, social media applications, and office equipment and technology
- Current trends in circulation and collection development
- Principles and practice of public library services
Ability to:
- Work well with staff members and volunteers.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Work hours that include days, evenings, and Saturdays
Experience and Education: Any combination equivalent to the level of experience and education that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities will qualify.
Experience:
- 2 years of professional library experience, preferably collection development-related
- Some supervisory experience preferred.
Education:
- Master’s degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited institution or equivalent combination of education and experience
- Foreign language helpful
ENVIRONMENTAL FACTORS
The duties of this position are primarily performed in a library setting, which may require that the incumbent be capable of remaining seated for extended periods. Incumbents assigned to this position should be physically capable of lifting, carrying and setting down objects weighing up to 50lbs without assistance. Additionally, incumbents assigned to this position should be physically capable of bending, stooping, kneeling and reaching above shoulder height when retrieving and/or placing materials on high shelves and/or low-level storage areas. Incumbents assigned to this position should be available to work occasional overtime hours to include evenings, weekends and holidays as required.
