Job Description:
Position: Medical Assistant/Phlebotomist Schedule: Full time, Monday through Friday, 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Primary location: Ventura, California. Travel to Oxnard and Camarillo offices may be required based on operational needs.
Position Summary
The Medical Assistant and Phlebotomist supports outpatient hematology and oncology care by preparing patients for visits, obtaining and documenting clinical information, collecting and handling specimens, and assisting the clinical team. The role provides compassionate, accurate, and timely service across the patient’s visit.
Essential Responsibilities
• Escort patients to triage, exam, or infusion areas; obtain and record vital signs, height, weight, medications, allergies, and relevant history in the electronic medical record.
• Prepare charts and patients for provider visits and infusion, verify required information, and help track patients through the next point of service.
• Collect blood and other ordered specimens using appropriate techniques; obtain pre-infusion laboratory specimens according to protocols.
• Accurately label specimens at collection, then handle, process, store, and transport them according to laboratory procedures and applicable requirements.
• Perform assigned laboratory procedures within training, authorization, and applicable laboratory protocols; document results and related information accurately.
• Assist providers and nurses with patient care, prescription renewal workflows, appointment or testing questions, and timely clinical documentation.
• Administer injections only when permitted by applicable law, training, and organizational policy and after the required assessment and direction by a nurse or provider.
• Complete assigned billing events and documentation accurately before the end of the shift.
• Maintain clean, organized, and stocked work areas; follow infection prevention, specimen safety, and laboratory quality procedures.
• Communicate clearly and respectfully with patients, families, providers, and coworkers; prioritize work in a busy clinic and escalate concerns appropriately.
Qualifications
• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Certified Medical Assistant; phlebotomy credentials required for assigned duties under applicable California law and organizational policy.
• Three years of medical experience, with strong phlebotomy and specimen handling skills.
• Knowledge of medical terminology, vital signs, patient care, and clinical laboratory workflows.
• Strong organization, communication, teamwork, customer service, and time management skills.
• Oncology or hematology experience and OncoEMR experience preferred.
• Ability to work in person at the Ventura office and travel to Oxnard or Camarillo as operational needs require.
